The way you had scheduled F22s trip, he'd barely have enough time to take a shit... It has nothing to do with being a beginner or not. Maybe we should all educate you on what going on holiday really means. Dolce far niente mate...

Any thoughts about staying in Camogli? That way we can do day trips to Portofino, Cinque Terre, etc. French Riviera would be nice too. I think it's going to be busy everywhere in July.

I've been to Paris four times now and each experience has been great. The people have been friendly. In my experience if you travel abroad and expect everything to be just like back home, it comes across in your demeanor. I've seen Americans and other nationalities make total bozos of themselves. Embarrassing really. Then they whine about how they are treated. I expected the people of Paris to be rude and not cooperative based on what I had read before my first trip. Nothing could be further from the truth. When I travel I learn a bit about the country and city history and culture first. With Google this isn't even hard. I try to learn a few words. Even when I fu*k up, which is pretty often, the locals really appreciate the attempt. An most importantly, respect the environment you are in and show it. If a traveler does these things, they get a lot more out of a trip than calling the city dirty and the people smelly. |

It also depends what you like - countryside or cities. BL: If only had a week and had never seen Europe before, this is what I would recommend. First I must say that Rome is my FAVORITE city in Europe. DAY 1 - Depart USA - Fly into Rome Day 2 to 4 - spend 2 nights in Rome (make on-line reservations in advance for the Vatican) - you will be able to cover a good part of Rome in 2.5 days. Day 4 - Afternoon/late morning, take the train to Pisa, see the leaning tower (take pictures of you holding it up) Day 4- Late Afternoon, get back on the train and head to Cinque Terra, Italy (the Italian Riviera) Day 4 to 6 - spend 2 nights there and just relax taking in all the beauty, beaches and food. Look up pictures for yourself, hike or take a short train ride to all 5 towns. Day 6 - Take the train back to Rome (couple of connections), stay the night in Rome and revisit what you like best. But by all means have an expresso or Cappuccino at Tazza D'Oro right across from the Pantheon as this is the best coffee in Rome, take home 2 kilos of beans as well. Day 7 - Depart Rome - Fly back to states Voila there is your week! If you want to stay shorter then deduct nights, if you want to stay longer, either add nights or add a night or two in or near Sienna Italy and take in the warm Tuscan sun and countryside. Sienna is a pedestrian only city, it's famous for the running of the horses in the square (it was in a James Bond movie). Hope this helps. I will be spending 2 weeks in Lake Bled, Slovenia, Lake Como Italy and Lucerne Switzerland the first two weeks of July because I love relaxing in those areas but I also pick some of the most picturesque roads in the world to drive my M3 on

I spent 10 years living in Italy and working all over Europe. When you work in a country you get a better feel for the place and the people. So I join the vote for Italy...great people, great food - there is just something special about the place. I would tend to avoid the really big cities apart from Rome. A drive down from Germany though northern Italy to spend most of your time in central Italy would be fun.
That I prefer Italy to my own country must say something for the place. |

I honestly have no idea what kind of vacation. I asked my brother what he wants since it's his bday and he said "whatever is fine." I am trying to avoid Germany because I have been there too many times and already have plans of going back for Oktoberfest this year. We'll be coming from a week in Bahamas so I would like to be somewhere not so beachy. Talking to a co-worker about it, he mentioned that French and Italian Riviera will be packed with tourists in July. I just wanna drive, eat good food, have some food beer, fun, and just meet/mingle with others. |

It's not a matter of moving around fast... the fact is that day one features 5 cities with 8 hours of driving. Nobody travels like this.

Although, the French Riviera is quite different. Pay 20 Euro for a chair and umbrella at a private "beach" for the day. Be waited on, get brought chilled bottles of Evian, champagne and rose wine. The "beach" is all rock, not many people actually go in the water. |

I do. I see cities as places they sell petrol in.

Great advice. OP and his brother should take the train up to Wengen and spend the night. Amazing views the mountains and Lauterbrunnen Valley below. Lots of hiking trails. One of my favorite spots.

Pshhhhhhhhhh, you must travel so slow. Bimmette recommends seeing every single country in Europe in two days. Get with the program.

Lol. You guys are too mean to Bimmette. I asked her to plan an itinerary and she planned it based on her travel habit. If anything it was my fault for not knowing how she travels (at least in Europe).
