The biggest difference is the engine displacement. 1.6 vs 2.0 L engine.

The list of differences will probably be very long, seen two entierly different engines. What is your intention or concern?

Just checking for a friend, didn't want him to order a 125i when he could remap a 118i to same power? Thanks

You probably can chip it close to the 125i, seen the 1.6 engine also exists in higher kW variants, it will probably also mechanical rather hold good together.

But I wouldn't like to live with the uncertainty and risk. When you step on it regularly, the 125i will give you more comfort of mind that you won't blow anything. And when you would, BMW remains responsable.

Did your friend consider the step up to the M135i? When you configure a 125i like many here with M pack & xenons, it's only marginally more expensive than the 125i. When you configure such a 125d, it's even more expensive than the M135i.

He has thought about one yes. An M135i in Estoril worked out at £2k deposit and £401 month over 48 months on 8k miles p.a. Doesn't sound that bad compared to the competition

The 125i is very nice without any doubt, but I guess still a "normal" car with motivating output, but no breath taking shove in the back either.

The M135i is no longer a normal car, output is +40% more over the entire rpm range putting it at eyes height of real sportcars. The M135i is the master of the M3 up till 5000 rpm for what engine output concerns. To me, this is a serious reference.

Delta in price is too small to not opt for the finest variant to my opinion. Never before, such a package was available for this cost. When would be in the market now, it would be this one.

His other option is to get a 125i MSport and wait just a few more months until the chip tune is available for it. (125i=160kw, chip upgade to 210kw with Exhaust cat back changed to 75mm) or wait a little longer and get the proposed M performance chip for the 328i.
As the engines are the same (different exhauste) It should be possible to modify the exhaust and use it and take it up to 255kw with the same exhaust size upgrade as 3 er. Then look out, a beast will be born.

It may only be a small difference in price between a 125 and a 135 in the UK.

Once you add the extras onto each (5 door version) it is still a considerable difference. (in Aus it is a $16,000 difference).

I would have the 135i if we had Autobahns here in Aus, alas we do not, and the speed limit is 110KPH, so most driving is around town and some small mountains. I prefer the 125i M Sport for that.
