Steering clunk sound and feel on and CW turns

Hey,

I was driving today and realised that when I turn the steering wheel right quickly, I hear and feel a slight click sound once only. This happens every time I turn the wheel clockwise.

Anyone had this before?
What could it be?

Not sure. In australia its standard to come with the one that when you switch to sport it is heavier feel, and when you switch to eco, its very light.

I think its called variable sport steering

Updated.

The sound happens any time I turn the wheel CW, even when engine is off and stationary. Its so annoying! Because it wasn't there the last time i drove, Im very picky to interior sounds

What you describe is Servotronic power steering which can dynamically adjust the power assistance provided to the wheel depending on the car's speed and the driving mode.

Variable sport steering gives you a steering rack with just two turns lock-to-lock, without increasing the steering sensitivity for slight turns.

A normal rack might look like this:

/ / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / /

The variable sport steering looks like this:

/////////// / / / / / ///////////

This variability is not affected by vehicle speed or driving mode.

All trim levels of 125i in Australia come with both Servotronic power steering and Variable sport steering as standard.

Thanks!

I've read that people with the variable sport stewing on the F30 have mentioned the exact same problem. Any car produced before November 2012 had the old steering rack. After November 2012 BMW has fixed the issue with a new rack.
I hope they fix it on mine. It's really annoying to hear it every time I give a CW turn!
Apparently they will change to a new upgraded rack if you have this problem

How long did it take to get it fixed?
Do i take to dealer when I get a service in a week and tell them the problem. They will know what to do? Or do i just tell them some people have had problems and a new rack is needed?

Well the noise in the video was there before and AFTER the Steering Rack was replaced. That knock in the video is common with those who have Variable Sports Steering. I haven't raised this with my dealer so let us know how you get on!

BMW have acknowledged a 'ticking' noise can be heard when cornering and have determined this to be a side-effect of the fully electronic system - that's different to the noise in the video though.

The issue that I had, which was resolved with replacing the rack, was a clunk from the front-right area during rough surfaces or when hitting lane reflectors at low speed.

I would give the service dept. a call and give them a heads up on the issue. They'll make note of it, but be sure to raise the issue again when you drop your car off.

I get both the steering wheel ticking noise when go over road unevenness and when stationary the steering wheel makes sound if you turn it CCW and CW back and forth. The noise only happens when turning CW.

I hear no strange noises from the steering, and I am generally very pleased with how the steering works on our 116i. It has the basic steering rack without Servotronic or unlinear ratios.

As in the ticking noise? I notice it when turning left/CCW.

I'll have to check if it's still there after replacing the rack, can't say I've noticed it.

A common problem with steering noises
You could also check that the foil guard over the steering joint above the rack is not bent or damaged and in contact with the ball joint. as road debris could be caught there. Depending on how it comes into contact, it can create clicking noises just in one or both directions

It's not a clicking noise. It's more of a thump and feels like a part of steering is not right.
And sometimes when I drive over some uneven surface I hear a bit of suspension sound, which apparently is steering rack from
What I read on the f30's.
I'll try and make a video of it stationary, will be hard to capture sound when driving, specially as it depends a lot on the unevenness, speed and when you turn.

Sounds similar to my issue... does it happen only when turning?

So dealers have ordered new steering rack, and that means they will change under warranty

Other things they will fix is the tail pipe corrosion, which will be put new tips.

They say the parts will take 12 weeks to arrive and 2 days to install.
