First BMW Purchase advice - Australia

Hello all.

My name is Sandra, I am in QLD and am looking to purchase my first BMW - a 116i; I love the cute styling :-)

I am looking to place an order for a 2015 model but have no real idea what kind of a deal I should be pushing for - as an example if say my quoted price is $45K, is it unrealistic to push the dealer and say at $40k you have a deal?
- I have no firm quote as yet and just use that as an example.
Or do I go with the price as it's BMW and as a premium car they wont look to move on price but ask for options instead to be thrown in?

Any other tips you may be happy to provide would be appreciated.

Hi Sandra
Is it the update model that they are quoting you?
BMW is under pressure to sell at present as MB is doing very well in the hatch department.

It will depend on the base price plus any extras you add
The price is only relevant if you want to know what price you are starting from.
The real price is the nett price that you accept.
(including all the extras and on road costs)
For example, the difference in price from what I was quoted initially by the 3 dealers on my 125i was around $6,800.00 lower than the first quote.
I accepted that then had a few other small extras included on the day the deal was done.
Dealers always have room to heavily discount the extras to get the deal done.

I found that the best way to get the lowest possible price is to get quotes from at least 2 dealers so that you can compare them and then use that price to lever a better deal.
Get identical quotes (same model + same extras)
Once you have the quotes, suggest to each dealers sales person a lower price that you think it should be. Generally here in Brisvegas, dealers can have up to 7% to play with off the RRP within the manufacturer rebate.

Advise each of them that you will be seeking quotes from other BMW dealers.

Lets say that it is 45K, you suggest you only want to spend 42K. If they try to push you back towards the higher price, ask for additional extras to be included in that price. (make sure that the extras exceed the value of the difference by 100%
(eg: 3K = 6K of RRP of extras)

This could be something like upgrades to xenon/led lights, a better sound system, a sun roof, folding mirrors, door handle lighting or included services etc.

Before you go to see them go on the BMW site and use the configurator for your model. It will give you some idea of what extras are available and their cost.

Advise each sales person that you are seeking the best possible deal and will only accept the lowest price that includes extras. It sometimes means that you finish up paying slightly more than you expected, but you get value.

In New Zealand we can buy a new 116i M Sports auto not the updated model for a basic cars price with a lot of options free. You properly will not get 10% off for the first year for the update car unless you have owned a few new BMW's before then BMW offer a special discount of 10%

If you can get a great deal on a new 116i car now from the dealer then you will not lose much on the resale as the updated car will drop and will basically lose more than the non updated model.

BMW New Zealand have been adding a lot more options at no extra price so this is the discount plus I got 10% extra off for owing new BMW cars. The options are worth $15,000 plus my 10% off.

The updated model is the same only a few little updates to lights, front plastic bumper and rear hatch the interior has not changed at all and this is what you drive in every day.

We also get 5 years warranty and 3 years free servicing except tires

If you have the time and energy, go to an Audi and a MB dealer, and get quotes for a base Audi A3 hatch and a MB A160(? May be the wrong MB model number, but the base A series). You won't like either of these, but at least if you have quotes in your hand, a BMW a dealer should be keen to deal. I think you should expect to get 10% of the list price.

Enlighten us by letting us know what 116i spec you decided on (sport, SE or M Sport) and the extras you are getting

It looks like the extra price is already there (included).

Only this makes the price look reasonable (unless they send a big ship to fetch a single car, which is unlikely, of course ).

Well now the dealer tells me that for the 2015 models there is no 116i but replaced by the 118i.

I was looking to order one with metallic paint, sports package with the comfort package and reversing camera package/ option and professional multimedia sound system.
Ideally I also wanted a sun roof but as the website doesn't tell me what the options costs are, this may be a stretch...

The model names have been shuffled with the same engines as before: old 116i is now 118i, old 118i is now 120i.

It might be a good idea to have a look at the "new car" section of carsales.com.au to get an idea of options prices. I don't think BMW Australia has announced pricing for the new range yet, though.

Sport adds on around 1500.00 to base price.
I think the professional sound is now standard on the new version.
If you are happy to pay the list price (expected around 48K) the other options and a sun roof you could get included.
I would try to push to have xenon head lights also included.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe the xenon option will be replaced by full LEDs for the LCI.

Indeed. But that does not affect the point "better lights are better (for safety)". Regarding the looks, it looks like that (from www.bmw.be configurator):

Yes you are correct, however the current ordering system shows the option as Xenon.
That and many options will change when the LCI order systems updates in May.
My recommendation was to upgrade to better lighting as it is far more expensive to do after.

I have standard lights on a 2014 116i and the lights are terrible. They were much better on my ten year old Nissan Almera, so I would strongly advise considering the upgraded versions.
