We aren't disagreeing on anything. You keep posting what has to happen for them to be fixed, that many won't be fixed and that VW is getting out of diesels in the U.S. and I never said anything to disagree on any of it.

I just pointed out an article that said many of the cars will be sold for parts.

Will VW crush every car?

Not at all. Volkswagen can’t resell the cars it buys; nor can it export them to other countries without modifying them to be EPA compliant. Since there is no EPA-approved modification—Volkswagen has multiple deadlines through October 2017 by which it must submit final modification proposals—the cars must be “rendered inoperable” by removing their main brain, the engine control unit (ECU). The rest of the cars can be scrapped for parts, and those parts can be resold here or abroad, including the engines. Only the ECU, the diesel oxidation catalyst, and the diesel particulate filter must be destroyed on each car.

Where will VW keep the vehicles?

Once VW dealers take the first cars, the factory will truck the TDIs to undisclosed storage facilities across the country. There is no telling whether Volkswagen will choose to stockpile hundreds of thousands of cars as it awaits EPA approval or begin stripping them immediately. Good news for VW owners of all stripes: The used-parts supply for late-model VWs could grow substantially, and prices potentially could fall as a result.

Well, sounds like VW is playing the delay game right now. Apparently a representative called the guy and they aren't taking the car back right now. Interestingly enough, they aren't saying no. Sounds like they are scrambling for a solution.

Doesn't sound like they are scrambling to me, they can drag the process out until he wishes he never got started with this. If I was the VW lawyers I would tell him they are looking into it and it might take a month or two to get back to him. His previously usable car and his giant pile of parts can all sit at his house for a while.

They have already accepted cars with missing parts, just not to this extreme.

The precedent has been set - in favor of the owner.

So VW just says they won't take his car back until he puts it back together. His next step? He has to decide if going the lawyer route really makes sense over a pile of junk parts.

They may eventually have to take it back but with them in this buyback for $16 billion, spending $10k-$15k in lawyer costs to make an example of him and his life miserable will keep some part of the rest of the owners from doing the same. Other owners are less likely to do what he did based on VW's response today and if VW had taken it back without giving him a hassle others would do the same.

They'll eventually take the car back - likely some compromise will be made, either partially reassembled or monetary change.

If this were to go back to Judge Bayer - VW opens themselves up to scrutiny regarding every missed time line for customer notification or missed deadline for acceptance and approval of submitted docs, or even penalty for every car the've accepted missing parts.

Legal reason they don't have to take the car back. First 8 minutes explains it but really 5:00 - 8:00. VW took care of this in their legal agreement and are welcome to enforce it.

Sold my TDi back today.

I was missing 100% of the emissions equipment, has 4 junk wheels and tires down to the wire, radio head unit was pulled as well.

Buy back took 15 minutes.

I don't recall exactly how many days, but it was longer than their stated commitment.

I uploaded the docs the first week the portal was available, then had to resend the gov ID because the copy was 'illegible'.

I received the 'you can schedule your buy back' email in November (18th I think) - scheduled my appointment on the first available date (today).
