Don't you think if BMW used a term like "Merino" for the leather on the steering wheel, they would actually use that term in their marketing materials? They only refer to the steering wheel as "leather", but they refer to the seats as "Dakota Leather". If they can come up with a name "Sensatec" for the plastic seats that are standard, I would think they would use the term "Merino" where ever they are actually using Merino leather.

Merino leather is the f30/f32 individual interior as well as the leather in the M3/4. BMW uses it because it has a better feel and the driver is always touching the shift non and steering wheel

http://blogs.youwheel.com/2015/05/03...her-explained/

It is indeed the BMW "nappa" leather on the stock M steering wheel.

While the term Nappa leather seems to be more widely used to indicate a fine grain/semi analine leather the other leathers BMW uses are wholly their own internal naming convention. Over the years I have seen Nevada, Montana, Dakota, and Merino leather and they just mean different levels of grain/hide quality and a marketing gimmick for BMW.

Where does this link confirm what type of leather is on the steering wheel?

It doesn't, that is just an explanation of the different naming conventions due to the confusion in this thread

The M sport package steering wheel is advertised by BMW as being wrapped in their nappa leather.

Where is it advertised? It only refers to the steering wheel as "leather" in the M-Sport Package on the Build Your Own page.

For the record, if I go to Bmwvin and plug in my info, the leather dashboard is listed as "Individual leather-covered dashboard". Individual usually means Merino, but then it's the exact same leather as my M steering wheel, which I know is supposed to be nappa.

My conclusion: the names nappa and merino are used interchangeably, and may very well be the exact same leather, although they charge more for individual Merino.

See this page for specifications. BMW made the M sport package w/ M steering wheel standard on the 2017 3 series. Cheers!

Thanks.

I wonder why they don't promote this on the Build Your Own page?
