03/18/2015 Update:

BMW M6 GT3 undergoes intense tests.
BMW Motorsport continued its development work on the new BMW M6 GT3 with an extensive programme of testing in Monteblanco and Portimão

BMW Motorsport Mar 18, 2015

Munich (DE), 18th March 2015. BMW Motorsport continued its development work on the new BMW M6 GT3 with an extensive programme of testing in Monteblanco (ES) and Portimão (PT). Experienced BMW works drivers completed many valuable test kilometres at the wheel of the new challenger for the GT and endurance racing scene and were involved in important groundwork on the set-up of the BMW M6 GT3. Lucas Luhr (DE), Jörg Müller (DE), Jens Klingmann (DE), Dominik Baumann (AT) and Maxime Martin (BE) were all in action in Spain and Portugal.

Media representatives also received an opportunity to take a closer look at the BMW M6 GT3. The GT sports car was exhibited at the international media launch of the BMW 1 Series LCI and the BMW 6 Series LCI in Lisbon (PT), giving the journalists there a chance to cast their eye over the new car.
“After many months of hard development work in the engineers’ offices and the workshop, we have now introduced the next phase in the development and are currently testing the BMW M6 GT3,” said BMW Motorsport Director Jens Marquardt. “Our full attention is focussed on providing our customers with a fully developed and competitive product from the word go. The ongoing tests are very important, as they lay the foundations for the next steps on the way to the car’s first race outings. We are helped in this sense by the experience of our BMW works drivers, who are able to communicate a wide range of impressions of the handling of the BMW M6 GT3 to the engineers. This work is time-consuming – but we are well on schedule.”
Frank van Meel, Chairman of the Board of Management of BMW M GmbH, said: “We obviously knew that the production version, the BMW M6 Coupé, sets the bar extremely high when it comes to sportiness. It is very impressive to see how our colleagues at BMW Motorsport are able to take this excellent product as a basis, on which to develop a GT3 racing car. The high-rev V8 engine with M TwinPower Turbo technology from the production M6, in particular, provides an ideal basis for a GT power train, and is virtually unmodified. I am confident that the BMW M6 GT3 will allow us to continue the successful tradition of BMW M and BMW Motorsport at the racetrack from 2016.”

The development of the BMW M6 GT3 incorporated all the experience that BMW Motorsport has acquired since 2010 with its successful predecessor, the BMW Z4 GT3. As a result, many improvements have been made to the new GT3 racing car, particularly when it comes to driveability and economy. One example of this is the use of the M TwinPower Turbo production engine, which generates more power and greater torque, while at the same time reducing running costs.

Quotes from the BMW works drivers on the BMW M6 GT3:

Jörg Müller: “The first test drives with a new car are always the most exciting, because you can make the biggest leaps forward in development during this phase. The driver’s impressions can be implemented far quicker than with a car whose development potential has largely been exhausted already. In the case of the BMW M6 GT3, it is particularly important for a lot of different drivers to lay the groundwork. After all, this is a customer car, which will have to be set up to meet the requirements of many different drivers when it comes to racing further down the line.”
Dominik Baumann: “I felt right at home from the word go in the cockpit of the BMW M6 GT3. Despite the size of the car, you have great visibility and a comfortable seat position as a driver. Given that we are still in an early stage of development, the handling is already very good. We spent most of our time working on the fundamentals.”

Jens Klingmann: “My first impression of the BMW M6 GT3 is a very positive one. In my opinion, the long wheelbase makes this car easier to drive than its predecessor. As a driver, you can tell that the BMW engineers have thought long and hard about what you need to be fast on the track when designing this car. We already have a basic set-up that is not far from what we will need in a real race. When it comes to driveability, the BMW M6 GT3 is definitely a big step forward. As a tall driver, it is also very nice to be able to relax far more behind the wheel because I have a lot more space than in any other car I have driven before. I am already looking forward to doing more testing.”

Lucas Luhr: “It fills me with pride when I am entrusted with working as a driver on such a large project as this from the outset. It is important that the basis of the car is right, and that all the changes we make have the expected effect. The developers had an outstanding and sporty basis to work with, in the form of the BMW M6 Coupé. You can feel that already in the cockpit of the BMW M6 GT3.”

M6 GT3 on the track! Finally! I wonder who and/or what series they'll target? Pirelli World Series? Blancpain Endurance? What else??

Press release:

The next milestone: the BMW M6 GT3 is rolled out at the BMW premises in Dingolfing.

February 5, 2015

Munich (DE), 5th February 2015.
BMW’s new figurehead for the GT racing scene has been given its first run: last Saturday, the test track on the premises of the BMW factory in Dingolfing (DE) provided the stage for the roll-out of the BMW M6 GT3, with which BMW teams will compete in national and international series, as well as at iconic endurance races, from 2016 onwards. The car left the garage for the first time at precisely 14:00 with Jörg Müller (DE) at the wheel. This gave the BMW works driver the honour of creating the next milestone in the development of the BMW M6 GT3.

“This is a big moment for everyone who has worked so intensely and passionately on the development of the BMW M6 GT3 in recent months,” said BMW Motorsport Director Jens Marquardt. “This car incorporates all the experience we have gained in recent years on the endurance and GT racing circuits. We are well on schedule with the development, and are confident we will be able to take to the track in 2016 with a package that is competitive from the outset. We still have a lot of work ahead of us, but I would like to take this opportunity to say a big thank you to everyone who has been involved with this fantastic project.”

Müller was thrilled with his outing in Dingolfing: “It is a fantastic moment when you walk into the garage and see this stunningly beautiful car. I am very proud to have taken it out for its first few kilometres. A roll-out is obviously just an initial performance test but, on the whole, everything was very good and we had no problems. The engine really impressed me. It is powerful and has good torque, which is important for a car like this. I am confident that BMW Motorsport will provide its customers with a fantastic racing car, in the BMW M6 GT3.”

The development of the BMW M6 GT3 is progressing according to plan. It is powered by a 4.4-litre V8 M TwinPower Turbo production engine, which has been the subject of modifications for its use on the racetrack. It has dry sump lubrication and generates over 500 hp, with a total car weight of less than 1,300 kilograms. Further features of the BMW M6 GT3 include the transaxle drive concept, a six-speed sequential racing transmission, and powerful motorsport electronics. The chassis’ aerodynamic properties were optimised in the BMW wind tunnel.

The BMW M6 Coupé provides an ideal basis, on which the BMW Motorsport engineers have worked meticulously to hone the BMW M6 GT3 for use in motor racing. Priority was given to ensuring the drivers are as safe as physically possible. To offer the drivers of the BMW M6 GT3 as much protection as possible against injury, BMW Motorsport itself developed and produced the FIA-approved safety cell, which complies with the very latest safety standards. The engineers also placed great emphasis on efficiency, ease of maintenance and reliability, which is particularly crucial at the 24-hour classics.

Anyone interested in purchasing a BMW M6 GT3 can send an E-mail to M6GT3@bmw-motorsport.com. They will then be registered and be the first to hear any new information about the car. Enquiries from North America are to be sent by E-mail to M6GT3NA@bmw-motorsport.com

I'm not 100% sure (will this replace GTE as well or just GT3??) but yeah eventually. Whether thats 2016 or 2017, now sure.. I do know however that it is slated to replace the Z4 GT3, with Sports Trophy teams slowly changing over from 2016 and beyond.

edit: just found this ...

In 2016, BMW Motorsport will add a new chapter to its success story in GT racing. The BMW M6 GT3 will replace the BMW Z4 GT3, which has been in action since 2010. Orders will be accepted over the course of 2015.

"This car’s properties make it predestined to succeed the BMW Z4 GT3", said BMW Motorsport Director Jens Marquardt. "The BMW Z4 GT3 has enjoyed success around the world in recent years, and is very popular among our customers. We obviously want to follow on from this success with the BMW M6 GT3. After all, the target we have set ourselves is to provide our customers with the best possible material. It goes without saying that we will continue to offer BMW Z4 GT3 customers our full support, just as they have come to expect from us."

So does this mean that this is bmw's first official forced induction race car? Have they ever produced anything other than NA engines for their race spec vehicles?

If you didn't point out that it was an M6, I would've thought it was just an M4...

TUDOR goes to full GT3 spec in 2016/17, IIRC so it'll be fine. They will also allow the full GT3 spec Z4 so I expect to see Turner probably running the Z4 and the RLL team running M6s.
Not sure if Turner will swap for an M6 in the PWC series as well as their cars do quite well already.
