In 1996, my first car was a 1979 BMW 528i (E12) w/ a 4 speed manual.

The car was the same age that I was. Nevertheless, even at 16 and 17 years old, the car was in great shape and incredibly easy to work on. And parts were very easy to find.

The 'big 6' M30 was a delight. I think it's worth visiting the history of that engine as it was the unit that made BMW famous in the 70s and 80s (being produced from the late 1960s through to 1993).

The video failed to mention the E12 M535i. In my opinion, this was the first real M-car (and featured a 24V head (M88?)) and is more interesting than the E28 M5.

Great video. My dad has a Morris in this colour with the black vinyl roof. Very 70's!! I think the 5 series is often the best looking sedan.... not always..

Brings back some good memories. Started driving a company E12 in 1978, took it on permanently and ran it for several years, when it was replaced as a company car with the 'new' E28 (a 528i). Was good to drive both models, was clear to feel how BMW had improved the 5-series.

My E12 was a 1976 528 revised model. Got me hooked on BMW, even though my father had owned a New Class 2000 sedan back in the early 1970s and I liked the 2002.
