I'm not claiming that $350k isn't top 1.5% income (or whatever it is). I'm claiming:

(1) many people who make $350k/year consider themselves "upper middle class" in spite of it being top 1.5% income.

(2) some sociologists include certain households making this income upper middle class

and

(3) cost of living differences further serve to complicate the issue (e.g. $350k/year in manhattan is top 6 or 7% income, or whatever it is)

Some sociologists consider only those who make up to 1 standard deviation more than the median income to be "upper middle class." $350k/year falls well outside of this bracket under this definition.

Indian guy here....

Parents have been in a Mercedes E class from the late 80's to early 2000's... had a Volvo station wagon as the family car....

Switched over to BMW in the early 2000's, haven't really looked back... I'm the first M car owner in the household... looks like my nephew is aching for a Porsche when he qualifies for a drivers license in 13 more years

I never notice them unless they make it obvious that they are staring at my M3.

This for the most part. Unless its some kind of exotic, classic or rare car I usually don't "notice" other cars. I only notice them when they are driving like a douche, in which case, it doesn't matter what car they are driving I always think... "it had to be a damn mercedes, bmw, audi, prius, camry etc driver!!"

This, my friend, is 100% spot on. I have to stand 5 feet away if I want to see if it's an S class or a C class.

I'd love to own an S class and put a C300 badge on it.

My father owned a 2009 GL450 for 90,000 miles. He was not the typical MB owner, since he also used it to tow a 6000lb dump trailer on weekends, which got many confused looks.

The car itself was fairly reliable, didn't have any issues really besides a few navigation system glitches. The problem was tires and maintenance for that thing was ridiculous. He didn't enjoy spending 10 grand for tires over the course of ownership for run flats with the 20" wheels.

The car in my opinion was fairly ugly, and had an odd problem I had never experienced before in a car. The ride was perfect, but the seats were terrible. Like leather wrapped park benches. Probably the worst seats I've ever sat in, which for a vehicle of that price point is nuts.

He now has a 2013 Grand Cherokee with the 5.7L V8 which has been much cheaper to maintain, and MUCH more capable in the snow. Even with 4-Matic and new tires the Benz was like a big sled.

I usually see old people or young kids driving them. The older people can afford them, the young kids probably have no idea about the maintenance.

Depends on which. So many lower end bleh MBs around here that I don't even pay attention to them. I'd rather see a nice modded AMG of some sort.

I felt sorry for the poor bugger who's s-class was stuck in the snow on a major road as everyone else drove past effortlessly.

Depends on the vehicle.

A CLA or GLE? Crappy vehicles that you have to be a fool to buy.
Most other newer Mercs? I think "why can't BMW create such interesting designs anymore."
