I'll be glad when the whole "SUV" thing is over. The next generation will hate them, just like my generation hates the 70's American station wagons, and the next gen hates minivans.

Same. I can't wait to get my grubby hands on the next AMG wagon.

Wow. BMW makes a full size SUV and now you are talking about planning what to do in your retirement?

I've owned two SUVs larger than an X5 (both Expeditions ) and both had a third row seat, and i would bet a few other bimmer owners wouldn't mind the ability to carry 6-8 people and not be in a minivan.

While an X5 diesel can tow... the main issue with it for being a track support vehicle is not being able to throw four 18-19" wheels behind the rear seat.

This X7 mule as well as the new X5 mule look very similar to a larger X1, very low profile, large higher stance wagon look. This seems to be the trend lately. Very similar to the new Q7 and XC90.

Kudos to Mercedes for staying true to their brand. BMW seems to be replicating Audi.

Bmw is about 10 years late to this game. It's a much needed vehicle, much more then other stupid niches. They have to be a quick study to go against the gls and to some extent the Range Rover. Let's see how it goes

On schedule actually. The SUV market continues to grow and one in particular with growth is the luxury end of the market where even luxury sedans and coupes are being decimated in sales. In every segment SUVs/Crossovers account the most units sold and still rising.
By 2019 BMW will have their entire X line renewed, refreshed and expanded.

Agreed; but really why is the styling conservative in areas where it needs fresh design and vulgar in areas that need class. In other words; please do not give us a GLS clone with buck teeth.

On schedule? I don't think so. Look how many GL or GLS has been sold since it first came out, what like in 2006?
Caddillac Escalade? GMC Delali? Lexus LX? Infiniti QX? Range Rover? VW Atlas?
Not to mention, this X7 project thing got delayed many years ago remember?, we know this from this very forum Scott.

I will reserve judgment until I see it without camo. It amazes me everyone is dooming this vehicle from what we see here...

Power train could be a little more substantial, but inside it feels like the most special of the lot and it is the most practical.

X5 was dead last of the 4. Feels like you are driving a rental fleet Hyundai in comparison to the rest. I do miss the idrive and BMW HUD though. BMW rules those two areas.

God I hope those kidney grills aren't real because they look ginormous!!

As a current X5 owner this test mule looks much larger all around. Longer and wider.
