F20 Timing Chain
I've got a 2013 F20 116d with 34.000 km purchased in August 2013. Unfortunately, I heard the death rattle about 5 weeks ago. Thankfully my warranty is still valid.
Has anyone purchased an extended warranty from BMW? How much did it cost? |

Hi,
Here in France, it costs about 200 euros including VAT for an extension to 3 years/60000 kms. Regards sl91

As far as I know, I'm one of the few F20 owners to have a timing chain problem. I thought the problem was fixed by 2011. |

BMW published a service note/recall for N46 in E6X, E8X, E9X in january 2015. Engines from 2007 and 2011.

Hey,
I've got a 2012 120d heard a ticky noise the other week so took it into BMW. They changed the chain and rails etc and the noise went, so yes it is affected. Only hope is you get the noise when you're still under warranty or try get a 2014, because I've heard that 2013 do it too! |

That's my biggest worry- I'm debating about trading in my 116d for a 118i or even taking my business elsewhere. If I can't extend the warranty for a reasonable price, this will be my last BMW I'm afraid. Don't get me wrong- I absolutely love driving this car, but I am not going to pay 5 grand to fix the chain again in a few years.

As far as I know, any BMW with the N47 diesel has a reasonable likelihood of timing chain failure.

Does the chain rattle at specific rev range as I have a rattle at 2-3k when cold in my 2012 116D? The car has had a new engine a few months ago at BMW at a cost of £8k due to flood damage.
