Due to cooling issues that engine has.

It needs more cooling than the standard models. Normally both vents are closed on the bumper, the M135i has one open vent for better cooling, the M235i two in some countries due to higher air temperatures.

I thought the air from them went nowhere unless you removed the brake cooling ducts?

The brake cooling ducts are wide open from the facory on our 116i M Sport. They are located in the outer edges of the center opening, far away from the fog lights.

On m135i open vent is on the RHS of the car and allows air flow into the oil cooler.

but do they go anywhere?

do you have openings in the inner wheel well ?

they have them in the front panel of the M135i, but there is a blanking plate in the inner wheel wells,

my ducts were full of leaves and half a small bird

Yes, they are open and pointed at the brakes. Came like that from the factory. I don't have the M Sport brakes, so I really need these ducts.

Remove the blanking plate in the inner wheel well and have cooler brakes in the summer and track days. Perhaps re-install blanking plates for the winter to keep some of the moisture out.....

I have mine open pretty much all the time...

Me too, although probably leave them off for good now as the amount of junk mine had collected I wouldn't what that rotting away over winter

And you never know when you'll need to cool your brakes.....

Of course BMW don't reduce the cost of the adaptive headlights option actually any M-Sport trim model looses out due to the body kit making it pointless having the fog lights activate on cornering.
