Tyre Pressure warning issue

Couple of weeks back the tyre pressure sensor system came on and told me rear offside was low. I looked at the tyre and found a nail in. I put some air in the tyre. About 2 weeks passed and on it came again which was a bloody good reminder for me to get it sorted which I did. However with a two week gap between the light coming on it was only loosing pressure very slowly.

After it was changed I drove about 4 miles on came the warning. I stopped checked the pressure, added a bit of air and reinitialised and carried on and thought nothing of it. Two days later on it came again, this time I rang the tyre company and they have been out again to check the tyre and found nothing wrong. Once they had gone I went out and about 2 miles down the road the light came on again!

I've called them and they are coming back tomorrow. I've asked them to swap the front and rear wheels around. Therefore if the sensor goes off again and shows it to be the front tyre it must be the tyre. If it goes off and shows the rear perhaps its a dodgy sensor?

I don't know how the system works so would this make sense?

Do you have pressure sensors in the wheels like the new cars, where you can see the exact pressure in the iDrive menu? Or the old system which just monitors rotational speed?

I can't see the pressure of each tyre on screen but it does tell me which tyre is having the issue. So not sure if thats a new or old system. Car is a 2012

This is what I see on screen

I think you have to 're-calibrate' the system, it may be 'remembering' the old problem ?

Anyways you should do it as a matter of course when you inflate tyres - check the vehicle settings menu, cant remember the feature name, but its alongside where you can check oil etc ...

Added: you have the old system, my 2015 F20 displays pressure & temp on a schematic ... my 2013 F10 was the same as yours ...

Yeah, done that after every time its come on and I've had to stop and add air.

If you replaced the punctured tyre with a new one you might be misleading the system with uneven grip.

Have you checked all four tyres' pressures or just the right rear?

It does not look like you refreshed your memory of the manual ("This is what I see on screen": "See Owner's Handbook for important information" ). May be you should. It explains how the system works, when it may malfunction, advises against exchanging front and rear wheels, etc. . So it does not know the pressure but looks at rotational speed.

So as I have only changed 1 tyre could the difference in tread depth between the two rears be messing up the monitoring?

The system looks at rotational speeds.
So as only 1 tyre was changed there is a difference in tread depth between the two rears and it will effect the monitoring. The dealer may be able to recalibrate it for you.
or you may need to replace the other tyre to fix it.

But when you calibrate the system (which you do yourself), the car should measure the current rotational speed ratio between the four wheels, and store that as a new default. When the car later measures a deviation from the calibrated values, it will give a warning. In theory, a difference in tread depth should not matter.

Yes surely thats what the calibration does else to get it to work properly you would either have to change the both rears and both fronts at the same time or possibly all 4 tyres depending if the monitoring is across all four wheels or across rear and fronts

In the manual BMW suggests a running in for a new tyre: it can settle down (after 200 miles or so - page 132 in the link above).

(No need to mention, it's only legal and sensible to have the same make/model/size tyres on the same axle.)

Yes, BMW advises against both ever changing a tyre position on the car (front<->rear, left<->right) - that's from the manual for the OEM seasonal wheel replacement toolkit I have and introduction of uneven wear (replace both tyres on the axle).

My "theory" is: when calibrating matg drives moderately, when the warning pops -"enthusiastically" (I actually refer to the manual here again , page 93). Thus a slight spin of one wheel (the "slippery" brand new one) might introduce that rotation speed difference. It's just how long that difference should last for the warning to be issued? What makes the difference between a flat tyre detection and DSC stepping in? How hard matg pushes, in what DSC mode, is the road any slippery (does it rain in UK )? I don't know. I do admit the "theory" is weak.

I never got any tyre warnings during ice racing weekends, where I have lots and lots of wheelspin. I think the car understands what I'm doing.

I have some wheelspin time after time (before shifting up to second, for instance ) and especially in winter, of course. It's just two wheels against only one or the steering involved... I don't insist, though.

It's unlikely the system is failing: it did detect the real puncture and, if there were an issue, the DSC/ABS should be suffering but they aren't I guess. The car understands, the driver does not. "If it is not possible to identify, contact a Service centre."
