Real or fake bmw f20 405m rims

hello,

i'm going to buy new rims and i found new 405M rims for my f20.
but they are 800 euro cheaper then the ones at the local BMW dealer.

now my question is how to see if the wheels are fake or real? they got a serial number but i still don't trust it 100%

Its a wheel not a turbo charger... I would buy the cheapest copy I could find.

Really? I think I would prefer a lousy turbo charger rather than lousy wheels. Cheap replica wheels are often heavy and soft, and will not remain balanced. The extra unsprung weight hurts comfort and performance.

Apart from looks, weight could tell the truth. By the way, some say BMW OEM rims are quite heavy (heavier than replica?). Yet BMW claims OEM should only bend when replica breaks, increasing survival chances.

If weight comparison is not available, you can go this path. And/or take a wider look at both OEM and true replica prices: a unique, outstanding offer is likely a fake (and, of course, OEM must cost above replica every time). I notice local independent vendors charge above the MSRP found on the local BMW site (is your dealer greedy?).

The exclamation mark looks doubtful to me anyway.

The key thing to look for is whether there is the relevant quality agency stamp (TUV) on the wheel. Yes, I know these can be forged, but if they're on the wheel, the box and mentioned in the seller's blurb, it should be OK.

PS: harkes, I've seen, on two occasions, cheap replica wheels fail on cars at track days. In both cases, the drivers were very, very lucky the outcome wasn't much worse.

Dont think anyone can feel the difference in unsprung weight and I think the chance of a rim failure is very small. I would save the money for an extra pair of rear tires and have some fun. We all have our different priorities.

Back in the days when I drove an E30, I had 7 sets of wheels for my car. The difference in comfort and handling was huge between the different wheels/tyres. The weight difference is very noticeable. I could measure it too. The lightest wheels were more than one second faster from 0-100 than one of the heavy sets.

I remember one set of copy wheels I had that were so soft that I could feel it when tightening the lug bolts. The torque limit was very undefined, and the lug bolts sometimes got unstuck, so I had to regularly retighten them after the wheels had been warm. The wheels also ended up being bent out of shape, and needed 200+ grams of balancing weights.

If weight matters I wouldn't get an OEM wheel. Have a look at some proper lightweight racing wheels if it is important.
