Ovekvam, you make a good point. Most owners of the cars won't know the difference between mechanical diff and e-diff. But those with more track and drifting experience will easily feel the difference.

"Where driver experience and conditions allow and where it is safe to do so (!), drifting, over steer etc is available on demand. The over steer is progressive and easy to manage with the Quaife diff relative to some clutch based LSD’s which tend to have ‘snap’ over steer by comparison."

This is not my experience. I find it easier to drift with clutch pack LSDs. The TorSen diffs like Quaife are nice for getting the power down early, but not quite as predictable going sideways.

I guess I'll chip in on the logistic side of installation.

I had planned on doing it. However I have to detach my differential, send it over to UK (~45 kg so Quafe told me), and after they have completed the work, they send my parts back. This first method you wait a long time for the shipping, and you cannot drive the car, but you are getting the work done on your own diff.

Or to speed things up, they can send you a unit originated from someone else's diff, and you install (/swap) it and send them yours. There is no wait for this second method apart from the installation work, but this is someone else's diff.

Just thought to bring it up if someone is about to do it. I think we have a wonderful car on our hands, if it tails out anywhere near E46 M3 which I drove for several hours, It'll be difficult to drag me away from this 1 series.

Quaife has some dealers spread around the world who are also qualified to install the unit. Here in Norway, I have one about 15 minutes of driving from my home. Once they have the LSD-unit from Quaife, they will only need the car for one day to have it installed.

Bumping this old thread.

Can anyone provide any insights on Quaife LSD vs BMW M Performance LSD, which is now available for M135i as well, since release as an option for the M235i.

I have Quaife on my m135i but can't compare to MP diff.

The LSD essentially makes e diff redundant. E diff works by applying brakes to spinning wheel. This in combination with ECU taming the power means you are slowing down. With LSD traction under power is higher for longer. Helps to balance the car, feeling of rear pushing the car round bends is more evident, reducing both understeer and steering input.

The e-diff is only enabled with DSC Off, and the ECU is not taming the power in DSC Off. Braking a spinning wheel will also transfer the torque to the other wheel, so it doesn't really slow you down. It will also balance the car (the torque couple from the driven wheels rotates the car into the corner) and reduce understeer and steering input. It does however not work as smoothly and quickly as your Quaife.

My redundant and slow down comments were meant as generalisation as not many people drive daily with DSC off.

My experience pre and post Quaife is traction light flashes a lot less with LSD which means less intervention by the encumbent safety systems.

I think you can boil it down to:
If you want controllability during drifting - get a clutch based (eg. BMW)
If you want maximum traction - get a helical (eg. Quaife)

For most people, it will probably boil down to the Quaife being cheaper. I think most drivers would be happy with both the BMW LSD and the Quaife.
