What are you guys smokin? Is has been said many times by insiders that the coupe version of the Z5 will follow. Just like the rag top of the "supra" will come later.

M version no one knows for sure at this point. But would be a mistake not to make one if they're aiming at the f-type as said by scott.

The BMW E86 M Coupe (06-08) only had 1,815 cars built for the North American market.

North America absorbed the most of the production for these cars and the previous generations numbers don't support it.

As I previously wrote an E89 with the S65 V8 (475hp) with limited options, equipment and choices of transmissions (manual or M-DCT) with a Street (Roadster) or Track FR (Coupe Fixed Roof) would have been stupendously awesome.

Supersprint would have developed 200 cell cats and some gorgeous headers that would have sounded like automotive heaven on the S65 V8!

If it started at $79,995 how many could have BMW sold in the US? 1,000 units? 2,000 units? Would have awesome to find out huh?

S85 V10 would have been great but would have been an even harder sell.

The new car will have an M version. And the world will be right again!
In place of an Z4M you got the 1er M Coupe.

The strategy involves a Coupe for BMW and a Roadster for Toyota. But only if the car is established well enough.
The genius here is the BMW is so well disguised. If you look at the front facing pictures you can see the kidney grille is positioned much lower than the actual disguise shows.

I see that, and looking how far up the headlights are, makes me wonder if they'll connect to the grills?

The same sentiment applies for the forthcoming Z3 against the replacement for the GT86.

You cannot really see much as they have cleverly and intentionally applied panelled camouflage to the bodywork to disguise every single line and detail. But it is an incredible looking car developed from the design of the Vision ConnectedDrive and 328 Hommage Concept cars. But larger and more stretched.

The Z5 will utilise a Carbon Core which will be highly advanced for its segment.
The Z5 is to spear BMWs revitalised sports car programme to adhere to a unique philosophy similar to BMWi but for the Sports Car and Performance segment specialising in lightweight materials , advanced construction, individual design and dynamics. Engines will start from a unique four cylinder to a potentially powerful Power eDrive model with up to 500 PS and eBoost which was used under the body of the CSL Hommage/R.

After the Roadster is implemented a Coupe will follow. As are potential M Models. But nothing is fully confirmed for those as yet.

It seems to have styling cues from the Zagato concept as well.

That's strange, I did a search for "Z5" and it didn't pull up this thread, what was I doing wrong?

Thanks,

I miss those little Z3s and 1st gen Z4s. True sports cars that embodied the BMW brand. The 2nd gen Z4 was really the first vehicle from BMW's latest era of dead steering feel, overweight cars, with soft suspensions (see F10, F30, etc.)

Interesting, I haven't driven the 2nd generation Z4, so don't have that comparison. I have a 2007 3.0i and it's impressive and gets good mpg, as well as being comfortable and handling well. I also have a 2001 Mazda Miata and the Z4 does feel a lot bigger, way bigger then older MGs and Triumphs I have also owned in the past, but a lot more comfortable as well. The second generation Z4 was apparently about 5" longer, that's hard to imagine. Compared to the Z3, the first Z4 was only a few inches longer and wider then the Z3.

I'll drive my 06 Z4M until the wheels falls off, I love that car more than anything I've ever driven in my life. I owned a Supra MKIV with a T-88 on it back in the day, and I wouldn't trade it for my little Z4M Roady that could with the measly little S54 in it.

11 years old, still get compliments from people daily about how nice it is. Most people think the car is brand new. I love it so.

It's just such a simple car that does everything I want, such a joy to drive. Might get a supercharger kit for it in the Spring and if so, it's all I'll ever want or need in a car.

New Supra better be good!!

Update: December 30, 2016

Z5 prototype sightings have been scarce in recent months, but a more revealing prototype was just spotted on the German Autobahn. The rear has dropped some camouflage, exposing the tail light design for the first time. Finished exhaust tips can now also be seen, along with a rear diffuser. Compared to earlier prototypes, this one likely sports a larger air vent behind the front wheels as the camouflage covering it now flares out dramatically.

One oddity is that this prototype is RHD.
