I love the part of this racket (diamonds) where the ring always magically appraises out for 40% more than what was paid. The buyer feels so good, and takes the appraisal, and his insurance agent adds a rider whose premium is based on that appraisal! What a scam. The insurance industry has many, but that is a really good one.

There is enough back-and-forth in this thread about the right amount to spend and virtues of size vs. quality to add much more. To me, you spend what you want to spend (within your financial means) and I'd favor quality (cut / color / clarity) over size. I spent a lot on my wife 16 years ago and still feel it was worth it when I see how much she continues to treasure that ring. It helped financially that I cashed out on some stock options because my employer was sold right before the proposal.

The one thing I will suggest is that if you spend $5K or more, strongly consider getting valuables insurance. Homeowners insurance only covers jewelry up to a minimal amount. If the ring means a lot to her and it is lost, it is tragic - even more so if there is a financial loss along with it.

If my wife loses her ring the next stone she gets is not going to be a real diamond but a man made one. The whole diamond industry and de beers is all fucked up imo.

Also agree and this ongoing cost should also be realized when buying the ring (possibly 50+ years of insurance payments) but the dollar amount and when to buy insurance depends on what you can afford to lose.

Worst thing possible would be to buy the really expensive ring, somehow lose it (actual lost or theft) and be counting on homeowners to replace it.

Hopefully it will never be an issue but what you plan to do if it is won't be pleasant if the ring means something to her. If it is her fault it gets lost, she will feel awful enough. If it gets lost some other way (e.g. stone falls out of setting) or stolen, she won't be happy to hear it wasn't insured if she doesn't know already.

Or you could just not waste money on a shiny piece of carbon and prevent all of these potential issues...

... or just buy the insurance if you choose to buy the ring or any other piece of expensive jewlery that makes your wife happy.

Insurance for my wife's ring (worth about 10k) is 16 bucks a year through USAA. Personally I think they are a waste of money but it is important to most women to have a nice ring. Fortunately my wife is tiny 4' 11" 95 lbs so a .75 carat diamond looks big on her finger.

If insurance says it's worth $10,000, and they write the premium based upon that figure, it's actually about $2,500 wholesale, if that. Honestly? $16/yr. doesn't sound like a lot. My wife's ring was $180/yr. and we dropped it after 1 year. If it gets lost, it's not going to be replaced, too many other ways to spend the money. And remember who's saying this....I dropped collision on my 335i that was costing $35/mo. because the car was sitting in the garage, but now I put it back on. I am not a fan of insurance.

can't remember if I've already said this, don't EVER let anyone convince you you don't need GIA paperwork on any diamond. It removes a lot of BS, but it adds cost to all the people in the supply chain. If you don't have GIA, there is a very good chance all the grading is off.

A reality check is bluenile.com. Though locals don't like it, there is no reason you cannot get those prices, in person, using your credit card, and paying no tax. Any GIA gemologist worth their salt knows how to sell you a stone at internet prices, with GIA paperwork, using your credit card, and paying no sales tax. BS industries like diamonds, auto body work, car repair, insurance sales, selling real estate, all of these should be exposed, but somehow, they are not.

Late to the party here, but I was rather sneaky with the other half's engagement ring. I knew vaguely what she liked, I also knew she'd found some specific rings that she'd completely fallen in love with. I'm in the UK, they were in the US and the seller wouldn't send to the UK. So I had it made in the UK with platinum instead of white gold, better quality diamonds (GIA certified D, IF, excellent polish, very good symmetry, no fluorescence and minor details of polish, serial nos verified with my own loupe) and a sapphire I personally selected (several were sourced and sent to me over several weeks until I found the right one).

Needless to say, it worked, and we couldn't be happier with it.
