What a great history

Quote:
In 1980 BMW presented the BMW M535i, a family sedan combined with a sports car. It became a success. The 3.5 litre 6 cylinder engine produced 218 HP. Five years later the BMW M5 was developed on the base of this car.

I also never quite understood why the exhaust exit is in the middle of the car, but slightly off center to the driver side. I'm sure there exists a reason.

I remember being a little kid and seeing that. I knew it was something special. In fact, I remember relaying to my mom that our new neighbors have one of those cars with the exhaust near the middle. She had no idea what I was talking about.

E28 M535

By far my favorite BMW. Well, I guess there is the E21 and the M1, and pretty much all the M3s. But still, this car is timeless to me, I would love to get a clean one for a daily.

1st gear is, where 2nd gear is, on modern manuals? Seems odd. How would that be more sporty?

Oh, my. German sedans from the 1980s. They were definitely different but they took some getting used to for some folks, in particular, my folks. They bought an '86 MB sedan and Mother couldn't stand the thing, saying she'd sat on seesaws that had more comfortable seats. The seats were then, and remain still to this day quite firm.

I don't know if the BMW's were similarly hard, but I would be surprised to find they weren't. Nonetheless, they were cool cars. A neighbor had one, but I never rode in it.

TY for posting. Brings back memories...just none pertaining to that car, but good ones all the same.

All the best.

That's a "dog leg" and is the sportiest non sequential gear box. It offers a faster shift between second and third gears than a normal manual. a shift between second and third is used far more often than a shift between first and second.

Isn't it fun to teach new BMW fans about old school BMWs ?

I had a friend that had one of these cars. What a cool car.

Exactly.

And for all the people out there that dont like M sport packages... Cars like this have been a staple from Bmw for decades. The M235i is likely the newest
BMW cult car.

Love the history of the 5 series. Personally would love to own an E28 some day.

My first car was a Euro/German market 1985 535i (E28). It was great, so high tech for the time, electric everything, even had a cell phone in it strapped to the e-brake handle which for the time was almost unheard of. Also learned how to drive stick on it. It was the start of my love and appreciation for BMW and definitely a reason I bought my F80. Unfortunately after 20 years it started to develop some serious electric problems and a battery drain so had to part with it, but a great experience.

I owned a '79 E12 (528i). The exhausted was routed between the gas tank (right-hand side under trunk) and spare tire (left-hand side under trunk). From this perspective, the center-exit makes a lot of sense.

Isn't it cool that the M235i is the precursor to the very first M2 as well? Coincidence? Probably not.

Thank you for clearing that up!
