Post BMW CEO Denies GM Partnership Discussions

It was recently rumored that BMW was in discussions with General Motors regarding a potential partnership to develop engines. However, BMW CEO Norbert Reithofer said yesterday that BMW has had absolutely no discussions with General Motors regarding any cooperative efforts.

Quote:
SPARTANBURG, South Carolina (Reuters) -- BMW AG CEO Norbert Reithofer said on Wednesday that the German automaker has not had discussions with U.S. automaker General Motors Co.

German business newspaper Handelsblatt had reported that BMW and GM had informal contacts about possible closer cooperation. BMW, GM and Daimler have cooperated on hybrid technology in the past.

"Absolutely no discussions ... not on our end," Reithofer told reporters during an event at BMW's plant in Spartanburg. "I don't know where it comes from."

BMW has been in discussions with automakers about engine development. In late September, money-loing Swedish carmaker Saab and BMW announced a deal allowing Saab to use the German automaker's four-cylinder 1.6-liter turbocharged gasoline engines in next-generation vehicles starting in 2012.

I had feared BMW would take a ride on the fail boat. Accident averted.

It is kind of sad that our fellow American hate our own brand so much.lol, on the other hand kind of a relief for me, I was also afraid BMW might getting on the next generation fail boat.

WTF...First Mercedes and Chrysler. The previous generation (W211) Mercedes E class supposed has a Mitsubishi engine for the E350 sedans and wagons. My 2006 E350 wagon is a POS.

Now an M3 with a Chevy engine! God no! I had a Z24 when I started driving and it was the worst car I've ever had the displeasure of owning.

I hope that it is true that there is no basis for this rumor. Otherwise, I have no choice but to move away from BMW. I will not buy a Mercedes again even though they parted ways with Chrysler.

Well you can say that now. You can't really complain about your first car, lol. I drove a '96 Z24 when I was in high school back in the late 90's, and it was decent for a teenager car

Back on topic though... It would definitely tarnish the brand, but would you like having a Z06 engine in your M3? jk jk

GM could benefit of this deal, because BMW diesel engines are powerful, smooth, "clean" and the 520d has an combined fuel economy of 56 Mpg; not bad for an executive saloon that still accelerates from 0-62 mph in 8.6 seconds.

The current diesel engines used by GM, which are supplied by VM Motori, are very coarse, not economical and they have abysmal CO2 ratings.

Whats wrong with BMW building engines for GM?

GM makes better cars and BMW makes more profits that help it make better cars and don't have to build shitty SUV's to keep up!

Anyway, could the n54 engine be any worse if GM built it? Some of you had better reliability with GM products then with your 335's!

And bimmerpost proves once again it is filled with the most biased image snobs on any forum I visit and you can get some pretty bad image snobs at Mac forums. Hell, worse then "redneck" GM forums.

Glad to hear that BMW has enough sense to stay away from GM. After all GM builds crap, and if it was not for the Govt they would not even be in business anymore. Which is what should have happened to them. If a company cant survive on its own then BYE BYE
There is a reason no one buys there cars.
