US spec 335I in Italy ? on gas.

Hello to all, I'm in the navy and I shipped my 335I to Naples,Italy. I notice that some of the gas station over here don't have any grades so my question is does it even matter cause, i've been using 94 grade back in the states? thanks to all who replies.

I just left Aviano after 5 years, so I can probably chime in, but not too sure about Naples. The gas coupons that you will use are good only at Agip and Esso stations. The standard grade of gas in Italy is usually 95 RON, which is pretty standard, and sometimes the only one available. I believe 95 RON is similar to 91 in the states. Some stations have 98 RON, which I believe is close to 93 in the states, but it was pretty hard to find 98 RON in Italy. Hope this helps you out a little.

Hi!

US 94 is the 98 in Europe, so just use the 98 on higher. Althought some countries dont have the number there to indicate the octane, so you have to ask which one is the higher.

I was just there doing ED with my 335i. On the Autostrada (mostly Agip), it's not too hard to find Super (RON 98). When I pulled up I'd just say "super" and they knew exactly what I was looking for.

One time it scared the shit out of me though when I saw the guy put the fuel pump from the "Super Blu" (Diesel, I believe) in my tank. I think the pumps were mislabeled because I was sure that it came from that pump, but it wouldn't have fit in my tank if it were diesel. The other confusing thing is that they generally have two grades of Diesel, one of which is sometimes called "super" as well.

BluSuper is actually petrol, at least that is how it was in Aviano. I think the diesel is just Blu, pretty confusing, I guess. In Italy, if the pump is not labeled, it is usually 95 RON. If you look at the price sign and there is only one listing for unleaded (senza piombo), then it is most likely 95 RON. It is pretty hard to find 98 RON in the city, but like Neon01 said, easier to find on the Autostrada. It can be a hassle and can probably get expensive (getting on and off the Autostrada) to get gas. Hope I am not confusing the OP with my long replies.

Most of the recent vintage BMW's (gasoline) will run best on the 98 RON in Europe, but can handle 95 RON fine. I usually have no issues finding the 98 RON in France and Germany, but in Spain and Italy as c0mr8d3 notes, you find the lower rating gas more often.

I can't say I notice much of a difference in performance, and maybe a slight hit on mileage (for an M3). And I can't complain at least in Italy, Germany and France at being able to gas up duty-free.
