Maybe the widgets will no longer default to the ugly ass clock when you select weather.

Apple CarPlay.
First thought... Why choose to invest in reinventing the wheel by developing an app store, creating or modifying special apps and software on a proprietary platform?

Part of my guess would be that they already started the process of investing in/developing all of this before CarPlay was even announced.

BMW ConnectedDrive Store
I still find this very lousy, compared to what other countries have access to... BMW Online Office e-mail accounts, Online Entertainment - Music without your phone, auxiliary heating, BMW Routes... Here in the US, we get minimum options in comparison....
In reference to CarPlay, The ConnectedDrive Store has been around for a while now in other countries. We just get everything last. SO, It's not like this is something new that they just created. US is just now seeing it... |

It tried to log in to the new portal with no luck. It requires a password change, and no matter what I put in, and adhere to all the requirements, I am told the password is improperly formatted. Anyone else with this issue?

Please note that the ConnectedDrive "Store" is just able to book BMW services. This is not an appstore. You can just book services afterwards if you forgot or decided to not order them when you bought the new car.
We have the store here in Germany since last year and I have not used it once. I have the ConnectedDrive package and the only thing I can order in the store is "Internet" (for one year) or the Online Entertainment which is just a Napster music flatrate. BTW: The portal is online here as well since a couple of months. You can edit your account preferences there, connect to the BMW Remote app and add stocks and news feeds. Nothing spectacular.

Try ALL CAPS. (Don't know if this will work, but the i App apparently works better with ALL CAPS.)

I just tried logging into the BMW Connected Drive portal and it won't work. Called BMW Assist and they said this is only available to US customers
Also, if you're in Canada and you're looking to add Live Traffic, Internet, Remote Services, Concierge etc, you would need to go to the dealer and get a software update which will be around $1000 + Tax. The App store would only be available for customers with an existing BMW Connected Drive services account looking to extend or add services.

called. Staying on hold for 15 minutes, was told try lower case, despite instructions online about special characters bla bla. It works. It's nearly useless, but it works.

1) It is unlikely that the proportion of iOS to Android users in the general population is the same as that proportion in the BMW buyer population. The basis for this is that the demographics of iOS and Android skew toward iOS at upper income levels [ref 1]. It follows that the BMW owner population skews toward iOS. 2) While iOS users make up the smaller total population, they actually make up a significant statistical majority when you look at the dollars spent in e-commerce transactions. This disparity is even larger when you look at app purchases, which would be of particular focus for BMW. It's not like we're going to be shopping while driving, but we will be marketed apps that enhance iDrive. This makes iOS users more "valuable" to platform maintainers. Think of it this way, if you're going to target a user, are you going to target the one that is more likely to spend money with you, or less? I absolutely hate the clickbait title of this article, but it contains some good statistics that explain this phenomenon: Android is for Poor People. Comscore has similar findings. For BMW, which platform to support is a matter of return on investment. BMW knows their buyer. They have to, or they wouldn't survive the current automotive market. The most obvious answer is that it simply doesn't make sense (financially) to support Android (yet). Reference 1: Pew Research - Smartphone Ownership 2013 "Android and iPhone owners are equally common within the cell owner population as a whole, although this ratio differs across various demographic groups. Cell phone owners from a wide range of educational and household income groupings have similar levels of Android adoption, but those from the upper end of the income and education spectrum are much more likely than those with lower income and educational levels to say they own an iPhone. Indeed, fully half—49%—of cell owners with a household income of $150,000 or more say their phone is an iPhone. And African-American cell owners are more likely than whites or Latinos to say that their phone is an Android device as opposed to an iPhone."

Back in 2006 when the iDrive on my 650i began to misbehave, lots of other owners posted similar problems. And we all bemoaned why BMW would have a Microsoft OS. (I posted on another BMW fan site where I was subsequently banned for starting a competing website for 6er owners.)
So if BMW has moved on to Apple, that's a big deal. Anything is better than Microsoft and I don't begrudge the move. (I type this on my laptop running Microsoft software unfortunately. The programs I need and use are more readily available for PCs and I hate the bubbly Apple icons. But I do recognize crap when I can.)

BMW is a pretty smart operation with talented designers / engineers, so I can't imagine them delaying Android support for any reason other than demographics -- Apple (iOS) and BMW demographics probably align nicely.

My genius told me last week that the new BMW iDrive reads the Android text and email messages directly but that with the iPhone you need to do a work around.
He couldn't tell me why.

Not only that, but BMW is taking its sweet, sweet time bringing a Snap-in Adaptor for the iPhone 6 to the U.S. (It's available in continental Europe). And no such adaptor exists for the 6 Plus ... ... which tells me that perhaps BMW is starting its jump off the iOS-first tech bandwagon. If that's true, the next question is: What to jump on to next?
