I'm not sure why BMW would want to join this club. I'm sure there must be a theoretical business case for it, however I'd have thought a BMW answer to the Audi A1 would have been a much higher priority especially given how much the 1 series grew this generation. :
There is Mini and 5 doors Mini against A1.
I don't get the point of this vehicle since Mini Countryman is on the market. And Clubman too!

So here is where the money is going instead of securing a rock solid core of lineup which does not consistently lose comparos.

I have an idea. Write down all of your wants, desires, and expectations, from a vehicle. Then open google, and search for the vehicle that meets your budget. What's that? You do not need a vehicle of this sort? Well then you need not worry, there are many more to choose from, while still being BMW loyal (assuming that is why you are here). There are over a billion more people in the world today than there were 15 years ago (E46 genre). I am fairly certain research was done prior to any vehicle development. Though sales trends would indicate they have pleased more than dissatisfied customers, so someone knows what they are doing. But I digress... I'm just a fool with a keyboard (it is a fake iPhone keyboard, so I'm even lower than that).

The design looks bizarre, I agree, but I think BMW is smart about widening out.

From a business perspective, I can see why they'd move in this direction.

Some of us need at least 4 doors. I got rid of the E92 because of how difficult it is to get car seats and kids in and out. It's doable, but laughable to those watching how hard it is.

Me too. I think I have one BMW purchase left in me, and it's looking like a CPO 128i. After that I think I'm done with BMW. I hope to go with a Tesla 3 five or so years from now.

BMW intends to break into yet another segment when it brings the 1 Series Sport Cross (a possible likely name) to market in 2018, according to Automobile.

What is it? It's been referred to as the "XCite" and carries an internal designation of NEC (New Entry Crossover). It's basically a tweener vehicle the likes of the Nissan Juke and Citroen C4 Cactus Evoque - not quite 1 Series and not quite X1.

As for looks? The design is reportedly still being finalized, but the proposals are supposedly progressive and polarizing. And "according to a senior BMW engineer, it will look as different from the X1 as the Range Rover Evoque does from the Freelander/LR2." Expect it to be an avant-garde design.

An internal paper lists a variety of the XCite’s attributes: avant-garde, different, urban, unconventional, young, aggressive, wide, low, courageous, anti-establishment, consciously compromised, disrespectful, sensitive, and sensible. Sounds like it won't be your typical small crossover, but one that tries to appeal to buyers looking for more style and flair than your average mini soccer mom vehicle.
Looks like a Grand Cherokee with a BMW kidney grill. See pic.

Thats not a Grand. Thats just a Cherokee. its ugly and soon will be restyled.

In fact JEEP can teach bmw how to design things.

Bmw is disapointing me in so many ways.

It will be a small crossover that will fit within the 1er family, its not fully conceived but it is on the table and in discussion.
The SUV is the no1 segment in the market today and that includes from small city SUVs to Luxury SUVs. It will also address fuel economy issues and contribute to lowering C0 2 emissions for the entire group.

In 2020 the whole BMW group will start from the new baby MINI up to a V16 Rolls-Royce Roadster.

You're not wrong but that could be like saying Audi don't need an A1 because of the VW Polo or Seat Ibiza. I personally don't see Mini in the same way I see BMW; they are, in what I have observed, aimed at entirely different markets.

That's why BMW will also make the M XCite, a true M thing with a twin turbo 2.0 engine, that plays S65 engine sound in the cabin for guys like you that also like to track their sport cross.

2018 Audi RS5  [0.00]
I like the way it looks
But how many more segments will bmw try to fill?
I mean pretty soon we will have fractional cars
The 3 1/2 series
The 4.05 series
There is every variant of almost every single model

You want 2 door, 3 door, 4 door, 4 door that thinks it a coupe, 4 door that's really a station wagon, but is trying to hide its ugliness, station wagon that thinks it's a sports car, the cabrio, the wanna be M model, the M model with the same engine as the prior, but with a higher tune etc etc
Do the designers now get paid by the model? As opposed to a fixed salary?
