Several laws relating to vehicles were repealed during in the eighties in Europe, one being the need for two reversing lights. There is only a requirement for 'A' reversing light. Unfortunately this just a sign of the times.
Even BMW is penny pinching now.
Manufacturers remove all items that are deemed ancillary and then add gadgets as we are happy to pay for these. Just look the list of options now
So now you get only one reversing light, no dials for water or oil etc etc etc on the 1er,
soon it will move through all the models.
Blame the low cost car manufacturers for offering a bunch of gadgets as standard instead of useful items like temp and oil pressure gauges etc

I see your point but not strictly true. My E92's had no water temp gauges, but the new 3 series do.

Eventually all you are going to have is a speedometer and a charge level indicator so we best get used to less information.

I disagree. Maybe on a short time horizon we will get less, but there will be changes soon. Apple has launched iOS7 with a dedicated car screen. I think most car manufacturers and mobile phone platforms will be forced to support this type of display, so that you can run your own applications on the integrated car screen.

Then we can select our own instrumentation.

I can see a time when we configure of instruments display the same way as EG a Windows phone. Moving readouts to where we want them and in a personal colour scheme. .

The the new 3 series and all the other F models except for the F20/1 have oil temp gauges not water.

The digital instrument cluster available in the 5/6/7 can do this to an extent. It changes the presentation of information and colour scheme depending on the driving mode you in, i.e. eco pro/comfort/sport etc. I haven't played with it in person yet so I'm not sure how it shuffles information around to show nav instructions, active cruise control display etc, but on range rovers, audi and mercedes they all move the info around depending on what features have been turned on or what mode the car is in.

I think the IPHONE BMW is upon us
The new smallest BMW is a front wheeler and has the 'I' in front of the number
Talk about the 'I' in Iphone car, will the next generation use an IPAD mini as its dash board.
Seeing into the future------- I am sorry sir, your car is not the latest version, therefore we do not have spare parts for it, you just have to replace this I BMW with the new version.

They always give a puzzled WTF look.

I really don't care about this. When i have to park in dark place i just turn on the rear fog light and magically it gives me more light.

Just replace the bulb with a Vled, I put those in my M3, massive difference! Its $50 for a bulb but it really lights things up. No need to bother with the Triton range unless you want to melt things. From memory mine were the 7507 bulb type, justbcheck what bayonet type you have

I ordered straight from Vleds site Matt. Not cheap, but I think its worth it!

http://www.vleds.com/bulb-type/rever...56-1-pair.html

http://www.vleds.com/bulb-type/tail-...5s-1-pair.html

I just ordered some more about an hour ago to do the rear turns, and may add some brake LEDs. Also as you can see there's no more orange "egg yolks" in the front housings when the turn bulbs aren't on. $16 shipping to Aus unless you want them quicker...
