Any former E36 M3 owners in here?

I was looking through some old pics and got a little wistful seeing my old e36m3. I'd take that car back in a heartbeat. I think it ended up in North Carolina after I traded it in on my Audi. Growing family or something like that caused a lapse in judgement.

The car had some good mods on it too, I think it put out around 270hp, which was a nice balance for a 3200# car.

Anyone else have one of these babies pass through your garage?

I currently have a '97. You can click on My Garage to see pics. I love this car so much that it's causing me to sell my e92! It only has 84k miles on her and she runs like a dream. I'm never selling this car.

I had a 1999 M3 in Hellrot (looked almost identical to car below) with black leather and I miss that car to this day. Unfortunately I had to part with it due to a major career change. Of all the cars that I have owned, that M3 was my favorite car of all. I joke with people that if you drove over a bunch of coins on the ground, you could pick out the denomination of each coin because the steering feel was that good.

I looooved my -96 estoril blue fourdoor M3. Had it for almost 10 years. It was the euro 321hp version.

Here are som pics www.rejsa.nu/m3

Of the M3 -96, M3CSL and the current M2 I have the one easiest to drive at, and slightly above, the limit on trackdays and autox is IMHO the -96. But also the slowest of the three

I had 2 verts. First was a 1999 Sapphire Black over dove one. It was my favorite car ever. I sold it when my wife got pregnant. Missed it so much we repalced it with this one:

DSC_2724 by Josh, on Flickr

Both were 6sp manuals (as they should be). Great cars. My e88 is the first car I've had since that minimizes how much I miss them.

I had a 1995 Daytona Violet M3

I sold it to a friend who was renting a room from me at the time. A couple years afterI sold it to him I got in it to move it, and it just felt old. I would probably appreciate it now, but at the time I was ready to be done with it.

My first car started out as a auto 1996 328i. By the time I sold it I had stroked the motor to 3.1L with a whole bunch of other engine goodies, swapped out the piece of shit GM auto for a ZF with a performance clutch, and put in a ton of performance suspension parts.

I really miss that car, I could romp on it all day safely. Getting on it in my current ride could very quickly get me a suspended drivers license/jail time.

I would take my old E36 M3 over a brand new M3 or M4 today. Such a fantastic car, and rare enough now that I always take a long look when I'm lucky enough to see one.

Still wouldn't trade my Z4M Roady for any of them though hah.

E36 M3s aren't that great, not then and especially not now that they need all kinds of maintenance. It's a slow car with good handling (as long as the diff and multitide of suspension components don't need a damn reubild). You can do way better if you want a slow car with good handling: miata, S2000, 350/370z, RX8, C4 vette.

Yep- had my Hellrot/Magma 99 M3 for almost 14 years. Had it from new, and it had 169,000 mi on it when it was rear-ended and totaled by a 16 yr-old in an SUV.
I still miss that car.

I'm aware of the accolades, but there were other better handling cars for the money at the time. Journalism has been dead for quite a bit longer than the E36 has been around.

I have to disagree on some levels, consider what else was on the market in 1994, even the neutered us M3 had 240hp, 17" wheels with impossibly low profile tires that no 'normal' car had ever heard of.

It was a very good handling car, with good steering feel, and it could be used every day, and serviced by anyone.

The e36 issues are well documented, but the m3 was a great car, and if definitely 'moved the ball' in terms of what you could get and expect from a sport sedan

Ha, well, it's telling that someone else's concept has been [incorrectly] cited to explain what I wrote. I wouldn't quite call it fake news, more like inaccurate coverage of real news.

The E36 M3 was innovative as a semi-luxury or PREMIUM sports coupe / sedan. I will give it that, for sure. But you guys are talking as if it was god's gift to the automotive world for its handling. It wasn't. There were already better handling cars out there, even for the money.
