Tim you are right re the gap in price in Aus, in part due to the non-discount policy on the AMG at this time. The backlog on orders is into early 2014 presently. Give it 6 months and things may change.

I love that AMG brought out this car, it has woken BMW up locally and as a resultant dropped their pricing and packaging, gotta be happy with that. Then there's Audi's rumoured price drop on their S3. Good for all of us punters.

The other thing is the interior, which is a matter of personal taste, of course. For me, the AMG seems to be ever so slightly inspired by what Ford and Subaru have done with their hot hatches, whereas BMW has done what BMW does, and is a little more subtle (others will say boring)

Half way in price between the 335 and M3
But it's mostly a 335 with a different tune
Who why do people pay so much for it?
Why not get the 335 and get the performance pack for it?

If I'm being honest, the dash absolutely ruins it for me. It's so uncharacteristic of Mercedes to have that much trim for the dash, I don't care if it's carbon fibre, it looks cheap. And if you think BMW's placement of the iDrive screen terrible, the screen in the A45 is even worse. The seats though, those look good.

So what 1 series models do they get in America? Do they get it at all? If so it seems weird not to give them the least economical version since that's what Americans like. Also, i've not heard but are you lot getting the A45? Just wondering since most manufacturers seem to not even bother trying to sell hatchbacks in America any more.

It's a real pity, a fast hatch can give some very unique fun.

Sport auto tested M135i xDrive.

Compare to the rear wheel drive M135i:

M135i xDrive 0-100km: 4.9, 0-160km: 11.9, 0-200km: 19.8, Hockenheim: 1.15.3
M135i 0-100km: 4.9, 0-160km: 11.5, 0-200km: 18.1, Hockenheim: 1.15.7

I've read a lot of good things about the 8 speed autos, but if they're that good and that close to dual clutch well it kind of makes me want to go back to manual.
.
Here's what Chris Harris thinks about the ZF 8HP.

http://www.pistonheads.com/news/defa...?storyId=26917

.....And now this year it has appeared in a BMW 1 Series. In the M135i the ZF is so quick and intuitive I had to re-record a section of film because I had assumed it was a dual-clutch system. It will upshift in 200 milliseconds and then drop into BMW's Eco-Pro mode for some fuel saving. It's the first gearbox that appears to have the same breadth of aspirations, in terms of performance and economy, as the average car enthusiast's brain............. A few years ago, in the midst of the double-clutch boom - when everything fast was moving in that direction - I asked someone from a German car manufacturer if he thought all cars would soon be using such transmissions. He grinned. "Just wait till you see the next generation of automatic." He was right.

My Wife's car has the ZF8HP, mine has a VW DSG dual clutch. The ZF conventional auto is 98% as quick but smoother and without the hesitation and jerkiness you get in some situations with dual clutch.
Given a choice I'd have the ZF8HP over a dual clutch box.

Cheers
Lee

M135i 0-100km: 4.9, 0-160km: 11.5, 0-200km: 18.1, Hockenheim: 1.15.7
If that data is correctly quoted from Sport Auto, I am surprised that an xDrive M135i is not faster than the rwd, not even to 100 km/h despite advantages of awd and launch control, and actually slower after that! BMW advertised that it should be faster about 0.2 seconds to 100, faster than both M135i and 1M and a manual M3.

For reference, the same data for 1M from Sport Auto test was:

0-100 km/h: 4.7, 0-160km: 10.6, 0-200km: 17.2, Hockenheim: 1.14.1

Despite its weight and manual gear box, and not forgetting that stock tires were PS2 with way less grip than PSS, there seem to be enough extra power in the 1M vs. the Mperformance hatches to stay ahead and pull harder with increasing speed, let alone a significantly better time on Hockenheim. Go figure how they managed only 8.15 on the Ring while it seems to have capability of doing it at least 10 seconds quicker if not more (7.45 BTG time in traffic by Advevo for instance, he seems to be convinced that stock car can do sub 8 seconds for a full lap). Who would believe that a Megane RS could do Ring quicker than a 1M while it can't even get close on any other track or performance category! BMW really used the 1M just for advertising future turbo performance cars, as a short lived halo car which was almost not possible to buy for most, at the same time carefully avoiding actual M3 owners feel intimidated.

Just thinking loud on yet another piece of evidence, got no issues with M3 or M135i, in fact love them all but it is really irritating how BMW played underrating policy against one of its best creations. Every single number advertised about this car was way off from reality. It really seems to be a garage project of a bunch of enthusiast M Division engineers.

I thought the x-drive did 0-100 was 4.7, it was even stated on the m website (put up link later). Also chris did the s-drive (when he dragged the rs3) in 4.4. I think it has to do with when you shift gears to get the best time.

Indeed! My other favourite M car was Z3 M Coupe, even more so than obviously more capable cars like E46 M3 CSL.

The Ring is a big track that needs a very fast car to set a good time. When the latest M5 (driven by BMW test driver no less) can only do 7:55 (and 8:05 by Sport Auto), I just don't see how stock 1M can do sub 8 min.

As for xDrive performance figures, here is a photo I took from the magazine.

Thanks, there are interesting other data visible; for instance flexibility (in-gear acceleration) results are pretty impressive, mostly due to 8-gear set up. On the other hand, while it can stop from 100 km/h pretty well, that stopping distance data from 200 km/h is incredibly longer than what 1M did in Sport Auto test (just 133 m. to a full stop compared to more than 145.6 for xdrive M135i, that difference is a huge truck or a school bus). It is also a heavier car than I thought would be, at 1591 kg. which is similar to or a bit heavier than a E92 M3 weight (manual E92 M3 was quoted 1580 kg. by BMW-EU norm weight- with base equipment).

About the Ring times, actually 1M track times are generally not that off of F10 M5 times, in Top Gear track 1M did even better, it still holds the best time by any BMW; similar results, usually slightly slower than the M5 on German race tracks. The claim was by Advevo, a pro race driver who has 2 1Ms, so I don't know if it can make a sub 8 or not but I m pretty sure that it can make better than 8.15 and not by a few seconds. The thing is we will probably never know

Well, on a small track M5's advantage no doubt is negated by the turns and shorter straight, so I am not surprised. In fact most the of the performance cars are bunched together, within a sec or two of each other on tracks like Hockenheim.

If I have to pick between the 1M and M5 on really twisty mountain roads, I will pick the 1M, lighter weight makes changing directions much easier.

In general, a lighter car is always more fun to drive, even if it is slower.

+1. Hence, my only real interest for eventually replacing the 1M may go to the direction of Alfa Romeo 4C with an advertised 895 kg. dry weight, a mid engined/rwd sports car with a full carbon chassis and no power steering. They should offer a manual version though, I am afraid obligatory DCT will dilute the fundamentals of it.
