COMMENTS

The star of this year's BMW exhibit and press conference at the 2012 Paris auto show is the recently announced BMW Concept Active Tourer (C.A.T.) FWD electric hybrid car [Official Info Thread].

The BMW C.A.T. offers an initial insight into the company's further innovations for the premium compact segment, as well as a preview of a future 1 Series production model. In this study, BMW demonstrates what it calls groundbreaking solutions in terms of both the interior and the drive concept.

As BMW describes:
With an external length of 4,350 millimetres, sporty proportions and hallmark lines, the concept study brings characteristic BMW aesthetic appeal to yet another vehicle segment. A raised seating position, generous space for driver and passengers and the flexibly extendable luggage compartment are the defining aspects of the BMW Concept Active Tourer interior. It combines versatile functionality with excellent ride comfort, all within the high-quality ambience of a premium automobile. A special version of the BMW eDrive concept takes care of the dynamic facets which go to make up the character of this study. The system comprises a 3-cylinder petrol engine and a synchronous electric motor, generating a combined output of 140 kW/190 bhp and accelerating the BMW Concept Active Tourer from zero to 100 km/h in less than eight seconds. The vehicle has an average fuel consumption of less than 2.5 litres per 100 kilometres and a CO2 emissions level of under 60 grams per kilometre. The lithium-ion battery of this plug-in hybrid automobile can be charged at a conventional mains socket. Its capacity allows ranges of over 30 kilometres when operated on electric power alone.

Vitals
  • Plug-in hybrid
  • eDrive pairs a 1.5L petrol engine (twinpower 3 cylinder turbo) with electric motor
  • Front wheel drive driven by 1.5L petrol engine [engine details]
  • Electric motor designed as fully-fledged power unit and powers rear axle, if necessary
  • Total system output of 140 kW/190 bhp
  • 0-100km/h in less than 8 seconds
  • Approximately 200 km/h top speed
  • Average fuel consumption: less than 2.5 liters per 100km and less than 60 g/km CO2 emissions
  • 4353mm long, 1834mm wide, 1560mm high, 2670mm wheelbase
  • Painted in High Reflection Silver
  • 20 inch wheels
  • Optional full color Head Up Display (HUD), a first in compact segment
  • "Cool Shade" panorama roof with electric controls for brightness/temperature
  • 40:20:40 backseat split
  • 10.25 inch integrated instrument display
  • Comfort, Sport, ECO PRO modes
  • Seismic Surf app
  • 8 inch black panel look display

I like that a lot. The outside looks like it could be released soon but the inside looks too 'concept' for it to be released within the next year or so, if that makes sense.

Not really, if you replace the touch sensitive controls with traditional knobs/buttons and fancy roof for a traditional one, that interior is pretty much ready to go.

The LCD multi-function display gauge display has already been demoed and announced (see http://www.7post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=696084).

Agree, looks good on the outside. Interior will probably be much nearer the F20's.

On a second look, Can't argue with Jason's assessment. Not so outlandish once the concept car glitz is removed.

I think it looks great. At first glance there's a lot of body in the rear that seems unnecessary from the dead-on perspective, but looks great in oblique/side profile.

I think it looks really good! Definitely would not mind having that as a daily driver considering the gas efficiency

The interior of the (CAT) reminds me of the movie TRON.

I agree. Aside from the touch controls, the leather seems possible if BMW decides to have such an option (costs?). Even the touch controls don't seem THAT unrealistic.

It looks amazing; far better than the 1 series.
Actually, for everyday use in Europe a better choice than the 3 series.

I really like it and agree that it's more attractive than the current 1er. I especially like the styling on the front hood and it's nice to see BMW eliminated the cut line across the hood a la the F10 and F30. Perhaps a little something for the LCI? Lastly, I'm guessing it might not make it to the production version, but I loved the suede/alcantara insets across the dash and the base of the seats.

The car gave an impression of being on the bigger side until I saw the guy standing next to it in the Auto Express video. Looks quite small in context.

The car is cute, practical and you can load a new microwave you just bought the last feat is almost impossible with a 3er sedan
and far better while parking and manoeuvring

When I saw this car for the first time I already got into shopping mood; I just wanted to buy it; outright.
Then it came out that the car comes only in 2014/2015.

Didn't think I would ever say this but I really like this car. Can't wait to find out how BMW brand's first FWD car drives.

Best regards,
south
