you should go back and say, well i'm going to charge £105 per hour for the privilege of having my car in your garage.

btw, 2 hours of that will be coding, where no physical person is doing anything.

Maybe the BMW stereo fairy commands high wages!

I'm in two minds now as to attempt to negotiate them down, or just give up. Even if i got it for £600, that's still a lot of money for a car stereo.

Better than 2-3 grand though.

Even at £600 it's hard to justify, save your money and spec the upgraded stereo on next car.

I think the moral of this story is always tick the factory fitted option when ordering the car, unless you want to get raped by a BMW dealer to install a retro fit.

Probably, but I think there should be 3rd party companies out there offering both Alpine & HK retrofit at a reasonable, although premium price. Didn't People at BMW ever took a decision and changed their minds...?

I have been told that the upgrade is not an option for my car because I have the professional unit.
Any idea why that would be?

How about buying the bits, paying a car hi-fi specialist to fit and get bmw just to do the coding?

I'm sure a car stereo specialist wouldn't charge £115 an hour.

The retrofit for the f20 doesnt need coding.

The BMW EBA retrofit instructions are somewhere on this forum. Nothing about coding in there.

According to those instructions, installation should take 2.5 hours although my dealer thinks that's too optimistic.

Here is the manual, got it a while back and seems no recoding is needed.

Received my kit from Schmiedmann the other day, haven't yet had a chance to think about fitting - work is a bit crazy right now.

Anyways, it doesn't look too bad to install, I plan to do this myself. If you want to go the same route I suggest you read up on the other threads on the forum about not unplugging anything else etc. If you did that would mean you need to get the car recoded if you did.

Just need to order the door tweeter pods and make some time. Will try to document my install when it gets done and post it here.

Apologies if my gibberish doesn't make sense, its 6.30 in the morning

Upgrade not available on Professional Radio (SA 663) ???

Hi. I've just been told the same thing by BMW. I have a new 118d SE with Professional Radio (SA 663) and am told that the Alpine upgrade is not available when they plug my VIN number into their ETK system.

Any one else having the same issue?

I't's bizarre!

If you take a look at page 7 of the Installation instructions where it describes the Diplexer. You'll see that connector B4 is specifically designed to be attached to cars with fitted with SA 606, SA 609 and SA 663. Connector B2 is for cars with the Business radio. You'll see this information again on page 12 where it describes the installation in more detail - "Only cars with SA 606, SA 609 or SA 663 Connect branch B4 to the tweeter".

Hi guys,

if anyone is interested in buying the OEM Alpine upgrade kit, you can get it on this website. You would, however, have to do the installation yourself + get the new door trims at your BMW dealer.
http://www.salesafter.eu/product_inf...m-alpine.html&

It also states the same info about the radio professional, sadly..
"Fits not for cars with navigation business (SA606), navigation professional (SA609), radio professional (SA663), BMW HiFi-system (SA676), BMW HiFi-system professional dsp (SA677) or harman kardon HiFi sourround system (SA674) !!!"

Its a good kit to install if you have the std crap speakers. I am busy looking for mounts to install better 4" speakers at the back now.

I have installed e87 alpine system to my 2014 f20. İta plug & play no need to coding and no coding applied. I recognized later its not original amplifier that bmw gives. Whiich one is better the original alpine system retrofit (for f20) or its same or e87 one. :

I installed the F-Model Alpine Kit a few days ago and IT ROCKS. I know I am not a hifi specialist but I can say that it sounds a LOT better than the stereo standard system. Especially you have BASS now with the alpine kit.
But: Don't forget to code the Alpine Kit!!! Doesn't work without coding. Otherwise you don't get the full sound! Do not listen to people saying it doesn't need coding.
Took me a whole evening though to install it. Not that easy.

By the way: It's an F20 with Navigation Business.

I think your kit is'nt the same one :
First one was only a 4 channel installed in the trunk just an evol of E8x

Actual one (from 2013) is a six channel and it goes under the glove-box :
