Why use it if you can live without it? I rather modulate the throttle.

Usually because I plan to drive without sliding on public roads, at least most of the time! :-)

The DTC helps me keeping the driving style tidy. And it reacts very quickly if I hit an icy patch in a corner, so it can help me save the car.

In earlier generations, the DSC was too slow. When driving an E90, I will switch the DSC completely off, as it tends to overcompensate when it reacts on top of my own reflexes. The system of me + DSC ends up being dangerous. In the F20, it feels safe. If I react correctly, the car will not do much. If helps me instead of fighting me.

So its a matter of preference. I agree its more safe. But i can drive faster with dsc off. And i like to correct wheelspin myself instead of electronics doing it for me

But i see your point.

I can also driver faster with DSC Off. But DSC does more than correcting wheelspin. If you get in an understeer situation, it will help you to rotate the car as well.

But where is the fun in all the electronics helping you? Yes its more safe but also boring.

I agree. For track driving (which is mostly for entertainment), the DSC is left off. But for public roads, safety has higher priority than entertainment.

And I have to say that the electronic differential brake feature that kicks in when DSC if disabled, adds to the fun. I kind of like the automatic rev matching as well, along with ABS brakes. Some of the electronic aids are nice!

If you've done one of BMW's M Experience drive days, which includes not just driving M cars on race tracks very energetically but also wet motorkhana and wet handling/braking manouvres, you get a great appreciation of what those electronic aids do (and do NOT do). I found an M4 was almost undrivable on a tight wet motorkhana course with DSC/DTC off (the high torque hit at relatively low revs makes throttle modulation really tricky)

I can imagine in the wet they are of great value and i would probably drive faster with them on compared to dsc fully off. But I still rather like to be in full control and drive a bit slower. I feel it's the only way to learn and see how the car responds.

Interesting - last time I did the full fat M day it was in E92s. They were awesome with everything off, really fluid and easy to drive hard using the throttle. The wet skidpan circles took a bit of practice for a novice like me but the old V8 M3 was certainly not snappy.

When I drove the M4 and M2 recently, they were set by BMW to Sport so moved around a bit and made you feel like a hero but certainly the M4's DTC light did flash now and then.

I often drive with DTC off. I'm suprised at how much more transparent the feedback through the chassis is and how much better the traction, both launching and out of corners. In the dry, it's great fun, and does function as a slightly cumbersome LSD. In the wet, on public roads, and at high speeds, DTC is firmly on.

I would also prefer to drive DSC Off in that situation, and I doubt that I would be slower with it off. I competed in autoX for many years, and got comfortable steering the cars mostly with the pedals. If the course is really tight, you need to let the rear end of the car dance around the cones, which the DTC/DSC will not allow.

You're right, as I've done days in both, and the old (no, not old, let's say superseded...it was a great engine!) V8 had a very progressive throttle, and made wet track control much, much easier than its T6 successor, which just dumps a heap of torque into the rears at very low revs. No doubt if you had one and practiced on those surfaces, you could make it dance...but to me, driving it for the first time, the current M4 presents the driver with several handfuls with the all nannies off

Having owned one, I really doubt that S3 is stock. That said, it seems the speed limiter is still in place, which is unusual for a tuned car.

I miss driving on the A2 Autobahn with my 535d back in the days. Used to yearly make around 20.000km only on the A2.

German Autobahn, love it And even though there's always this one asshole, usually the respect and communication between the fast drivers on the German unlimited autobahns is awesome

Getting nostalgic watching this old picture
