For the record: I have no problems with the gearbox going from 1st to 2nd in my 125i. Sometimes 3rd seems a bit hard to engage, but I have that in more cars, might just be me.

I haven't driven in extreme cold tempratures yet, but the manual gearbox seems to work nicely between all gears in our 116i. I have done some autoX and track driving that involves fairly swift gear changes, and I didn't notice anything unusual. Turbo engines are of course not nearly as responsive as the old natually aspirated engines with throttle valves directly connected to a pedal by a wire. You have to give the engine more time to rev up if you want to do heel/toe downshifts.
