The F20 1-series continues its testing rounds, spied for the first time in silver color and the new wheels style in these photos. Not much remains for the imagination, except perhaps the front headlights, which, like all previous F20 prototypes sports camouflage taped in a manner to trick the eyes into thinking they are larger than actuality. The yellow camouflage tape on the side mirrors conceal integrated side view mirror turn signals (close-ups here), the first of its kind on a BMW.

The all new 1-Series hatchback (a car not likely to come to the USA) is expected to make its World Premiere at the Frankfurt Autoshow in September (see http://www.bimmerpost.com/future-bmw/).

And in usual BMW fashion, the Coupe body style (F22) should arrive roughly 1 year later, as a 2013 model. BMW M will also have its hands at the new 1-Series and an M version should arrive no earlier than 2 years after the arrival of the hatchback this year.

Looks very clean. But it needs to be dropped about an inch or so.

I agree with Philip! Why did BMW make this new generation 1 series even TALLER than the existing 1 series?

Maybe there is some chance the coupe will be lower than the 5 door?

Cheers!

The current 1 Series M Coupe is a 2012 model. Am I interrupting this correctly to mean that there likely won't be a 2013 1M but maybe 2014 F22 1M?

Edit: I think I found my answer after a more thorough search.

Actually the 1 Series M Coupe is a 2011 MY. Definitely in the US, and probably everywhere.

Thanks for replying. Many of the early articles I read called it a 2012 but I see now at bmwusa.com that it's a 2011.

the tail maybe it sort of does look like a golf, but the front... doesnt.

but I hope the headlights dont look like the ones on the 6 series.. not liking those lights very much.

Otherwise I am really interested in this car

The big questions are whether there will be a 6 cylinder engine in this car and whether or when there will be a coupe. The coupe issue seems to be clouded by the possibility of a 2 series and a movement of the 1 series to FWD. For all we know, the F20 will be the last RWD 1 series and the replacement for the 1 series coupe (if any) will be very different from what we are used to now.

There is a clarity regarding the 3 series sedan with a coupe to follow a year later, but the 1 series coupe remains shrouded in mystery.

Will the hatch come to the US? Conventional wisdom would say no, but look at the new Lexus hybrid luxury hatch.

Was down to the car entering a new segment that it had to "established" before expansion could be considered. This period takes about two years to deem whether the car is or not successful.

Because the 1er is now in it's second generation the cycle will be shorter with the new car (Coupe) appearing 14-16 months later.

So F22 should be out Nov 2011 - Jan 2012
No. The Sporthatch is launched in early summer with the on sale date in Europe from September and the Coupe comes 14-16 months later from the launch.

The math says November 2012 to january 2013. That leaves a gap of around 9 months after production of the 2012 model winds up. They will probably wait until January 2013 to call it a 2014 model.

That answers the "if" question but nothing about 6 cylinder availability or if it will be 1 or a 2 series. Really a lot of unknowns. I don't know what I am worrying about. In 3 years I will trade my 135i for something else. Most likely it will be a 3 series.
