Fun, fast and easy BMW build?

Hello all,

I am relatively new to BMW's, I have been a Domestic guy for the past 10 years and I got my 135 about 5 months ago. Since then I've hit it with JB3 2.0 and DCI, CC brakes etc... I love to mod.

But besides modding an expensive car, I love to work on older cars, whether it be engine swaps, engine tuning or just restoring.

So my question is, what is the most common, highest horesepower and easiest chassis/engine combination in the BMW platform.

I have seen people take M3 engines out of E36s and put them in 325i's and turbocharge them, making OBSENE power levels 700-800 HP.

Are they using stock blocks? Stock internals?

What is a stout stock block and bottom end? I am looking for something to make 400-500 whp in a light E36 chassis. I would like to use one of the Inline 6's pedigree and turbocharge it.

Minimal expense, maximum power. Think 5.0 foxbody, cheap and fast.

If you like to work on older cars, I would take an M3 E30 EVO and restore it. Well if you like turbo charging, than the E36 is a good base. But I can't help you, I do not know anything about.

It has to be affordable too. I really like the body style of the old E30s and E36s. I definately want to turbocharge it, something beastly.

It has to be affordable, no crazy car models. Nothing too rare, just a stout motor with forced induction in a light chassis. I am thinking E30 3 series chassis with Inline 6 turbo.
