Which X5 and why?

I'm considering getting an X5 and I'm leaning towards a 35d version because I enjoy my '11 335d.
I am looking at the 2013 & 2014 models and it seems there are a handful of differences between the two. My wife is trying to convince me on the 50i model, the horsepower and torque are very appealing, the mpg's and reliability aren't.
Anyway I figured the best place to ask about which one to get would be here.

Inb4 "A man who likes the D" jokes.

That's all, I got nothing else. I did drive the gas 5.0 version. Steering felt squishy. The X5M was pretty great, but that's a ton of money. I've never driven the 3.5 version. I kind of just go for horsepower most of the time. THAT'S for real all I got.

Edit: get the sweet wheels/tires though. The 5 with normal wheels/tires looks kind of meh.

I'll ask a couple of questions them make a few comments:

Who is driving it?

What is it's purpose?

We have a 2012 X5 3.5i and it is used as my wife's daily driver. It is a fantastic vehicle for daily driving, get's reasonable fuel economy, and drives well for a vehicle of it's weight. It is a sporty SAV but always remember that it is an SAV. I cannot speak for the diesel versions as I haven't driven one but I'd imagine that the torque is out of this world.

If you decide on one I highly recommend that you keep it under warranty. We just had the transfer case replaced under warranty, a repair which would cost over $4,000 without the protection. You can expect to go through a set of tires in about 25K-30K miles and I recommend replacing them with Michelins. It's a complete lottery on the tires that the vehicle is delivered with. My mom's 2016 was delivered with Pirelli Scorpions.

I hope this helps.
Cheers-mk

Both my wife and I will drive it. It will be a daily driver. We are keeping our 335d and trading in another car of ours. I think the 2013 might be better as it has the same engine as our 335d, and if we can find one still under factory warranty I would buy the extended warranty.

Stay away from the N63, far, far away...

http://www.topspeed.com/cars/car-new...-ar166918.html

http://www.roadandtrack.com/car-cult...ns-bmw-n63-v8/

Having a E70 (N62) I was considering a 550iX and test drove one. It supposedly had the above fix but you could clearly hear the chain slapping and CA blamed it to the car sitting. Yeah, right. Since then I met a 550ix owner and he was feeding his car 1 QT every 1K-2K. Not sure why the S motors did not have this issue or as bad of an issue? I think, it was b/c the parts that had problems were different in the S motors but did not research it enough b/c I had lost interest by then.

Look at the used BMW market for cars w/this engine you will see great prices and low mileage. Then compare that to the MY14 (not convinced they fixed the issues in MY14 version of the engine) and MY15 (different engine). The difference are more than the MY15 being a newer model.

My experience w/the V8 made me go back to the I6 engines.

For what it's worth we just picked up an X5 35i with M sport and it's a great DD with a nice balance of power and fuel economy. My neighbor just got a 13 50m that sounds awesome and pretty quick. But sucks on gas milage.

Let's say you drive 12k miles a year:

X5 35D MPG: 27: 444 Gallons, $2.10/Gal: $932
X5 50i MPG: 17: 705 Gallons, $2.50/Gal: $1,762

You will spend an additional $830 in gas per year. Worth it in my opinion

Me? I like the power and sound of the 50i. My M3 gets 17 mpg, but its 17 mpg of all smiles.

Up to you, depends on your goals.

It's not 1200 gallons difference, it's more like 262 gallons (444 gallons vs. 706). You'd only use 1200 gallons over 12K if your car got 10mpg.

10 MPG difference. Which equates to an additional 1,200 gallons of gas a year. If premium gas is $2.50, you will spend another $3k a year in gas. Which is definitely significant.

When gas prices where crazy I ran a couple of scenarios based on premium gasoline vs. diesel costs and mile/gallon. If the reason for purchasing a diesel is to save money on fuel the numbers don't work out. Then adding the cost of urea packs and it just plain does not make sense to me.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the e70 X5 had different production locations. 12s were made in Germany and shipped, while 13s and onward were made in USA.

Aren't both of those production years affected by the same problems as mentioned above? In regards to the 50i model anyway.

I have the 3.5i X5. No issues with the turbo inline 6. If you need more power you can chip this motor and not void the warranty.

keep in mind that even though 35d has more torque, the shift points and others are optimized for towing, and 35i accepts MPPK and MPE and other tunes...

Get the X5d. I have a Touareg TDi (and Jetta TDi) and LOVE to drive them. We looked at X5d's, but found a terrific deal on the Treg.

Both my TDi's have a tune and exhaust work, and the Touareg is a torque BEAST (600 lb ft), plus it gets 35 mpg. My Jetta get's 50+ mpg, and puts down 340 lb ft torque!

A company in Raleigh (Bimmer Performance Center) is heavy into BMW diesel tuning. If you haven't tuned the 335d, check them out. They also tune X5d's.

Being in FL, you don't have emission inspections for diesel cars either...

A tune and DPF delete on the X5d, it'll put down X5M numbers
