Name one vehicle sold that is faster around the nurburgring and cheaper than the civic.

Next question: How much do you have to spend on a new car to out run a Honda Civic on the nurburgring?

I think it’s true Honda fan boys that have lusted after this model for years. Now that it’s finally here, no matter how old they are, how much the car is, how fugly it is, they had to have it. Again, not my cup of tea but I can definitely appreciate the car enthusiast aspect.

C'mon, people buying these here in the US are not buying them to track in Germany. Hell, I bet very few see any tracks at all. Bench racing is cool and all, but I drive my cars in real world conditions & am also not a pro race car driver.

What are you buying the Type-R over?

I just seen one in southern ontario and was like meh, it's ok but waaaaay too much stuff going on. Like they just tried to make it look extreme just for the sake of being different.

I then went on autotrader and seen these are going for 50k in canada.

That's correct. 50,000 for a fwd (fast) civic....

See, that's the thing, jmg : If you have to ask this question, you suffer from one of two things:
- A very rudimentary understanding of the automobile business, or
- A self-enforced ignorance of any vehicle you don't like or understand

The demographic for this car is as obvious as (to use a comparison already made in this thread) that for a Lamborghini. You may not like it (I certainly don't), but I totally understand why it exists and who's buying them. It's as predictable as lightning from a thunderstorm.

(Sheesh, the cluelessness on this forum just astounds me sometimes!)

Ignorance is remedied by asking questions, even stupid ones. I asked a question. Why people like to shame questions is a mystery to me. Spread the knowledge. I didn't get to where I am by not asking questions I didn't have answers to.

Lmao. Recent college grad and 6 figure salary should never be used in the same sentence.

Mid $30s is my limit for my daily driver. It needs to be new because I have too many cars for reliability issues. I would buy the civic for a beater. Unfortunately, despite it's amazing track like performance that embarrasses $100,000 beasts, it looks hideous, the suspension is a little on the Stiff side and I don't think my wife will allow me to do it.

I couldn't agree more (I'm a former journalist who is now paid quite well to question things in another field). Apologies ...

... but I guess your query surprised me considering the volume of your activity on this forum. All one needs to know about the demographic for this car is the fact that the 'R' in Civic Type R is the most aped (i.e., faked) car badge on the planet. One acronym sums it up: JDM.

It was an honest question. As someone who grew up during the JDM explosion on the mid to late 90's, we were one of the first generations to drool over the Integra Type R, Civic SI, Skylines, etc. The next trend, as I understand it, was the Evo, STI, WRX, Z, S2000 etc. Are the current Type R buyers people of my age who yearned for the Type R in high school and college? Or are they the younger crowd, new college grad age with some coin? My point being this: I was a big JDM fan as a teen. I can easily afford a Civic Type R today, yet I have no desire to. This car should appeal to me for nostalgia's sake. But it doesn't.

Thing is, JDM doesn't age well -- and the context of the term has changed dramatically since the late 1980s-early 1990s (I'm a child of that era, too) thanks to the tuner market -- which, I will add, Civics are the prototypical platform for. The fake "R" phenomenon is Exhibit A in that cultural shift.

The 'next-trend' examples you state above are, for the most part, not classic JDM archetypes. Evo/WRX/STi had a rallying component that fueled development -- street racing in them was a secondary phenomenon -- and thus makes those cars attractive to certain types of racing fans that wouldn't be caught dead in, say, an Integra Type R. The S2K was never strongly equated to JDM since its primary competition (Mazda Miata) was never sought after by the JDM crowd and its secondary competition (European roadsters: Z3, Boxster, SLK, TT) were null sets to that crowd.

The current Civic Type R's primary demographic is wealthy young ethnic Asian males, ages 16-30. Sorry if that sounds stereotypical, but stereotypes usually become such because there's a certain amount of truth behind them. Sure, there'll be buyers who don't fall into that category, but that doesn't mean those buyers are a target demographic.

I think for a DD it would be fun.

After seeing a white one at the LA auto show, I forgot to say that the exhaust must be dumped for a dual tip. Also, this car does not have a real handbrake. I have no idea why Honda did this. There is that stupid electronic one where you flip a switch. Oh I know why. because the cupholder is the size of 2 super big gulps. Idiots... It would piss me off enough not to buy it, unless there's a kit out there that will revert back to a standard handbrake.

Saw a dark grey one parked on the street. Looked really good, but still had the dumb red pinstripes. You have do buy either black or dark grey.
