Massive Drive Train Problem!! Help!

Hi,

Need some expert advise if possible on my BMW.

This is the problem attached. I am reluctant to bring the car in and spend £99 for someone to turn around and say they couldn't find a fault (as the warning message in sporadic), or that they couldn't find the fault in the first hour so will need to be in Servicing for a few more hours.

But what i was hoping you may know is why this fault would occur, what it means and have you seen this before (what was done to rectify it?).

Some background information:
  • The car has done 18k miles 2012 BMW f20 1 series auto 116i (2 owners - i have owned it for a year and covered 6k miles)
  • New MOT issued Nov 2016 - No faults
  • The error message appears during driving only (but not all the time, it appears some days and not other days). Once ignition is off and the car is started again the error message goes away (This keeps happening).

Thanks,

the problem is most probably related to turbo hose or blow off valve. it is a common problem on F series with N13 engine

From what i have read here, there are various issues which can cause this error to pop up on the Idrive screen. I had it too and i freaked out..HAHA

Getting back to it..does the car drive normally? any misfire or any other abnormal behavior? Mine was a faulty coil pack, engine would idle perfectly but when under load would misfire like crazy and the warning would come on the screen.

My M135i did this. Turned it off, turned it back on again, all good. Took it to the dealer, couldn't find anything wrong with it.

Hi there,

Sorry to hear about your problem; I had the same on my m135i.

Apparently it was my turbo seal. You're told anything in here in South Africa though.

Has not come up in a while

When the alert comes on the car still drives.
When I stop the car and turn it back on again the fault goes (that's why i'm hesitant to take it into the dealer as i don't want them to turn around and say 'oh nothings wrong')

It hasn't happened in a while. I will note the Turbo problems, thank you all!

Hi Skippy,

As others have mentioned this warning can mean a bunch of different things. I have had the same warning with my 114i (same engine as 116i). It came up every now and then also and went away after restarting the engine.

Both times it was a broken/ worn electromagnetic valve of the camshaft, first time on the intake side, second time on the exhaust side. First time was under warranty luckily, second time (4 months later) unfortunately not.

I am sure your dealer should be able to provide you with a diagnosis, the car will store all the warnings in it's memory with the corresponding mileage, so they should see the history of the warnings too . Good luck, hope its a minor issue.
