Fuel Consumption question

Hi guys!

My dad is looking into getting a new car after 18 months with his 520D M-Sport and is looking to bridge the gap between that and his Westfield.

Unfortunately we have very strict criteria, or that was what i thought. the original plan was something 3 doors,petrol, german and with at least 250hp. that didn't leave me with much choice, so i came up with this list.

Audi S3
VW Golf R
BMW M135i

but he's now considering a 330d xdrive m-sport but it has business nav and he loves his current pro nav, plus i know he will moan about business.

Now i'm a bone found BMW guy and i'm trying everything to get him into the 135 but he's hesitant due to the fuel consumption as he is going from something that does 45-50 normally to something that is petrol and definitely more thirsty.

now my best friends older brother has a m135i and that why i personally know its a phenomenal car, but he drives it like a yobo and gets 17-20mpg out of it and i was curious to know from a broader spectrum of owners what your normal mpg is?

just to give context my dad does around 20k miles per year and spends around 300-400 quid on diesel per month

Had mine for just under 1K miles now and averaging about 27mpg - tight engine, short journeys etc - so should see mid-30s on the sort of trips yer old man does ...

I've had mine (M135i LCI Auto) for 2 months and already covered almost 7000 miles. A good average of Motorway, A-Road and City driving using Eco-Pro to Sport+ modes.
My average MPG is 30.4 which is taken from an app that records fuel used and mileage and not from the cars display so it's accurate.
The MPG can range from 39 on a good run to 22 if I push it.
I'm pretty happy with these figures given the performance thats on hand if I want it.

Manual, never driven with regard to economy thus take off briskly, use the throttle to exit corners, like to hear the engine note etc. I get

40mpg on the Motorway at 120km/h - I've had 45mpg at 115km/h in ideal conditions
33mpg on moderately winding open roads with elevation and the occasional overtake at 100-115km/h.
29mpg when drived spiritedly in the country including a mix of tighter twisties and faster open corners and a bit more overtaking.
26mpg in suburban running when driven moderately - average 35-40km/h
22mpg in inner urban running, using the power or if the traffic is heavy - average speed 25km/h or therabouts

considering you want the M135i for yourself, it is a rather dangerous car for an inexperienced driver unless you are going for xdrive.

both s3 and golf R are the same cars and they are slower and less fun to drive compared to M135i.

a 330d xdrive m-sport would be logical choice in your situation i guess

Four wheel drive is not necessarily safer. Rear wheel drive will make the stability system cut in and warn you sooner if you are too heavy footed on the pedals. It will also limit the speed you can reach between corners in slippery conditions. All in all, I would say rear wheel drive is less dangerous.

Even with the stability system completely off, four wheel drive can be very difficult to handle on the limit if you are not trained in advanced tricks like left foot braking.

Two examples I have from careful driving in eco-pro in my M135i

1) 366 miles from the tank at 34.6 mpg
2) 379 miles from the tank at 35.6 mpg

On both occasions I'd say 75% of that was cruising 70mph on motorways. Generally careful yet still compared to most people fast acceleration.

I only know these two examples because I photographed the display. I like the challenge now and again of seeing how much I can get out of the tank before the range hits 10 miles. Obviously there's still plenty of fuel left... at least, more than the range suggests... I guess that's to prevent you actually running out.

I won't tell you the least number of miles I got out of the tank

I like to have the distance left before the car needs fuel displayed in the instrument panel next to the trip meter, which I zero when I fill the tank up. During driving, I add up these two distances to find the current range, which gives a good indication about how efficient I'm driving. At best, it is over 1000 km in our 116i. During track driving, it can be below 300.

You can test drive an 125d too..
Miles away from an M135i, but it's the sportiest diesel hatch! It has a little power bump too with the LCI release.

I keep a logbook, so I have completely accurate record for my M135i.

Over 45,000 k (28,000 miles) my consumption has averaged 7.98L/100K (or 35.4mpg); the lowest fuel consumption I've recorded was 6.76L/100k (41.2mpg) and the worst 12.2L/100k (23.2mpg).

I'm probably older than your father ? and a spirited but (mostly) legal driver. Most of my driving is 70:30 motorway to urban.

Urban driving does affect consumption quite a lot, especially stop-start traffic (which I hate, and try to avoid). If my mix of driving was the reverse, ie, 70% urban, I'd not own the M135i.
