Jeep Grand Cherokee as daily driver?
Any thoughts on a Jeep Grand Cherokee as a daily driver? Just returned my leased Lexus RX and want to buy something this time around. Figure an SUV is good to have as something always comes up. Friend has a 2012 Limited model with 55k miles incredibly well priced. Looks the reliability looks decent once the recalls are addressed. Identical to the one pictured below.

The older ones aren't to bad(not a Lexus though), but the new model has the stupid shift dial. Like an I drive but for shifting. Pretty sure that's what killed the star trek Chekhov actor. Dumbest idea in a long time. So counterintuitive. No feel at all, you must look down at it and see where the light is. Awful.... Just Awful.
Really looking for a SUV I'd look for a Toyota Sequoia. I think the 4.8 is the motor to get(not for sure). |

I had a 2014 SRT for three years and it was great. Loved it. The shifter works fine, and it's not hard to use. Not sure how the non-SRT models are.

Absolutely nothing wrong with that. I had a Grand Cherokee Limited for a while then traded it in when I bought my Rubicon.
Just get a GOOD price on it before you do anything... IMO prices on Jeeps are jacked wayyy up right now. Try to get something rock bottom then go for it. |

I loved my 2012. Overland Summit hemI. Drove it new to 97k. Had a water pump and small wire harness fail under warranty. Otherwise no issues. My wife said it was the only car she was sad to see it go. The shifting issue was corrected on the new ones we got a deal on a 2013 GL 450 so that's the replacement. Still, the GC felt more luxurious and had way better handling. Better than my parents 2013 accord. I'd get another in a heartbeat.

I have a 2014 that I use for business trips to my job sites (requires I have a lifted 4x4). Bought the Diesel Overland and already have 53K on it. Great vehicle in my opinion. Wife takes it when I'm not using...
I had a fuel rail issue that threw a CEL at 20K...took them a couple tries to fix it, outside of that...it's been great

And I have driven the Lexus. It has two redeeming features vs the GC. It has a Lexus badge on the front, and a Lexus badge on the rear. Terrible handling, braking, acceleration vs gc I think it looks cheaper inside. Smaller, less towing, maybe better mpg. But that's about it. Did I mention off road,

JGC is the SUV I want to love, but can't get myself to buy. Some go through their life without anything major or that can't be attributed to age/use. There are a fair #, it seems, that go through major repairs prematurely (e.g. thrown rods)...and I refer to new ones. While that can be said of a lot of car makes, it just seemed to me to be higher than average w/ JGCs.
If the maintenance history is fairly clean and the upkeep has been good, though, your friend's might be worth looking at. Just educate yourself on the nuances and gotchas of them. Jeep Forums used to have a pretty good buyers guide that went over the major items for XJs and WJs. Used w/ a known maintenance history is the only way I'd get one, but that is just me. I agree with EALm4, too.....new ones are overpriced. If I were to get a new Jeep, which I always find a compulsion for, I'd go w/ a manual, 4dr Wrangler.

Ratings by consumer reports etc are often fictitious. They counted warped rotors that were replaced because originals wereally a bad rUn on my armada as drive train issues. The fact was besides the rotors there were zero issues and it took avyear to get the replacement parts so my armada was rated poor. Silly. If it's a design flaw they will typically have a fix. With the 8 spd trans the manual shifter was confusing so they changed it. But the original ones not yetv replaced give it a black eye. The motors are tested and strong. It's far more reliable than a bmw.

My dad has a 2014 summit that is currently sitting in my driveway for 2 months. I think its a great car. Plenty of get up and go when you get on it, comfortable, practical. . .
The shifter is a little dumb but its not dumb enough to lose a recommendation: besides its been recalled anyway for the dangerous crap. I think its a great DD. . . I don't know why the first two posts are super anti-JGC. I also owned a 2009 JGC SRT8 which I thought was a great car as well. If that thing was a manual I'd still own it - my only gripe was the stupid 5 speed autobox which never knew what the hell it was doing. I vote yes for sure, its a great car.

I bought a new 2014 GC Overland V6. Has 35k miles on it now. It's my wife's DD. Only issue we've had is the oil pressure sensor needed replaced. Outside of that not one issue. I highly recommend it.
And to be honest it is the first American car we have ever purchased. I was scared the wheels were going to fall off as soon as I got it home after reading/researching. I'm very glad we got it. Very solid outstanding SUV.
