ONE and TWO Series SUMMARY: -- BMW 1-series, 2-series, M2, and Z2
ONE And TWO. The new Premium Compact Class.
In order to make room for the new family of Front wheel Drive BMW's. BMW are now locked in to seperate it's core compact premium family. BMW 1-series FWD Family
BMW's first foray into the highly contested Premium City segment will comprise of unique concepts with a sporty edge. The wheels may be front driven or in the case of the FAST optional xDrive. But the mission statement remains the same to offer a unique sporting impression even though the rules have been changed. The Z2 now becomes part of the FWD architecture and will comprise of a single model Roadster, The car is extremely compact and will offer a entry choice for a sporty BMW. BMW 1-series sDrive RWD
Allowing luxury options normally found in high end Premium luxury cars available in the compact class. The new 1er Sporthatch also heralds the introduction of next generation "Efficient Dynamics" technologies in order for the 1er to remain the principle choice as the most fuel efficient car in it's segment. BMW 2-series
The 2er showcases some new design movement with further progressive sporting interpretation of the hatch ,to some the new car looks more 2002 like than before. The Cabrio model will continue offering a soft-top roof and clean design lines without compromising looks and performance. Both will be launched in 2013 respectively. BMW M2
Since it is given that the baby 1er M Coupe should really have followed through and be called M1 in relation to the rest of the M cars. The inclusion of M2 allows the M Division to bypass that dilemma and offer a straight choice of M2. Following on from the exceptional response to the new 1er M Coupe. The new car allows more money and time and the ability to progress. Although the 1er M Coupe showcases what is possible in a tight time frame , BMW will work to emulate the current car by making sure that weight loss is significant a benefactor because it looks to it's forebears with the inclusion of a high performance four cylinder turbo charged engine. The problem with the current car is it's short window in regards to further progress, there are ideas but not the money nor the time to do so. This is something that will be rectified with the next generation as the regards to bring a successor "That will push the envelope" for small performance cars. BMW M-One - Compact Programme
with the Z2 now joining the FWD family , The original proposed Z2 which went to the final stages before the car was switched to the FWD programme. Is effectively reborn in this project. With the sub-brand BMWi arriving with individual products with their own design and technology to give the i3 and i8 complete individualism . Plans are in motion to allow BMW M as the other BMW sub-brand to offer it's own take of Individualism. With BMWi and BMW M to be the first to share material technology this compact Coupe and Roadster are seen as potential M models to take on the successful and revered Porsche Cayman and Boxster. Individual design , and exclusively M if given the go-ahead the smaller M models based upon the matrix of the F20/F30 could bring new customers to the M brand thanks to the appeal of the M badge, lightweight technology and stunning looks it could become one of the most significant M cars this decade.

This corresponds to yesterday's info about the M3 coupe replacement being designated as 4er.
Drawing out the lines: 2-series = Replacement for current E82/E83, i.e. upcoming F22/F23 coupe/cabrio 4-series = Replacement for current E92/E93, i.e. upcoming F32/F33 coupe/cabrio + Gran Coupe 6-series = Current F12/F13 + Gran Coupe Even series-numbers are the premium coupes/cabrios/Gran Coupe. Odd numbers are for sporthatch/sedan/tourer/GT? |

Very surprising to hear of a FWD BMW roadster. If BMW are serious about making a compact roadster they should move the drive train to the middle like the Toyota MR2, and MG-F!?!

M1 Hatch?

Just a question, will there be a 135i 5dr Hatchback? Or even an M Hatchback? The latest f20 spypics show a model with twin exhausts (one from either side of the hatch) and a similar bumper and discs as the current 135i. Joe |

I like the idea of the 1er being a family hatchback but then it confuses the 1er brand here in NA, or at least it does for me. In Europe, already having the 1er hatchback this fits more than it does here but I'm so used to seeing the 1er as the performance model.
With all the new ideas/concepts BMW is coming out with, I'm intrigued by the 1er lineup. As for the Z2, don't really follow the roadster so can't say much about it but can't wait for more information. |

Interesting.... But for christs sake, make all the damn M models that you damn well advertise for! Shorting the customers isnt winning any popularity points and has others looking at other marquee brands.....

I can't imagine many of the smaller cars mentioned here will make it to the US. Feel free to bash my opinions, but here they go:
I doubt either of the sport hatches will make it. FWD 1 series Gran Turismo - no way. City Compact - seriously doubt it, especially if there is the electic "i" in the works. F.A.S.T. would compete with the Audi A3 and with AWD, the physical height and price will be higher, perhaps making it a NA possibility. Z2 also seems reasonable enough for NA market. 2 series coupes & verts will make it, although with this lineup proliferation, would it be surprising to see 1 engine only instead of the 2 engines choices now? I don't see how an M2 could have a turbo-ed 4 and leave room underneath for 2 smaller diplacement engines with enough difference in output to justify 2 engine choices. I can't image the 2 series coupes & verts will be 6 cylinders unless the M2 is much lighter and turbo'ed out, thusly making it much faster. Even if this were the case, people would be very hesitant to pay more for a car with fewer cylinders, even if the output numbers are there. M1 concept is hot air IMHO. BMW doesn't need to compete with Porsche, and they don't want to, thus the entry level of the Z2, the only small size 2 seater. Cheers! |

Id be all over a Z2 if it looked like that. However, I would want RWD. I love the aggressive styling that some of these new BMW sketches have. Sadly, I dont think we'll see that carried over to the production models if any of these are actually made.

1 series - hatch
2 series - coupe and cabrio 3 series - sedan, GT, Wagon 4 series - coupe convertible, Gran coupe 5 series - sedan, wagon, GT 6 series - coupe convertible and I think I read of a gran coupe 7 series - sedan Odds and evens with their own unique designation. I wonder if there will be 1M,M2,M3,M4.... . I'm not feelin it...

I bet the M2 is just a 1 series M coupe with a new shell. I'm curious is the M3 will be equal to the M4 with the only difference being coupe/sedan. But, of course, I'm speculating.
