tailgate debadging
Hi all,
Any thoughts on tailgate debadging? Apparently it's very popular in Europe. it gives the car a very clean look from the rear, but any other reasons to do or not to do?? |

'Not to do' if there's an M badge there, 'to do' if there isn't

I think exactly the opposite way. If you have a 114i M Sport, you want to tell other drivers you don't have 300+ horsepower, so they don't go home bragging that they beat an M135i off the line. If you DO have an M135i, it is easier to surprise other drivers if you debadge it. The real enthusiasts will recognize it anyway.

My comment was a little tongue in cheek...
I've always joked with my mates about those that put performance badges on lower models... e.g., WRX badge on an RX. So my real response is leave them as they come...

If I have the option I always debadge. I just don’t see the point in plastering the rear of the car in makes, models, engine badges. It’s paramount to showing off in my eyes, so I remove them. I prefer to be more understated. I've just ordered a 120dx, and it will be debadged. The xDrive badge is especially huge and an eyesore IMO.
The only time I have badges is if the car already has them (2nd hand etc), or in special cases. There’s no way I'd take the M badge off my M3 I read somewhere a while ago that the UK generally debagdes cars. While Germany for example likes as much insignia as they can get. |

I got sick of snagging cloths on badges and it can be a pain if they trap dirt which is why I now have my cars debadged.

I've debadged both of our BMW's the moment I got them home. The main reason is I prefer the cleaner look of the back of the car, however it does also make washing the car easier. I've always used an old credit card to saw through the adhesive foam back and then used brake cleaner to remove the glue before polishing over the area. DO NOT try to pry them off, the opposite side of the badge will dig into the paint and scratch the car. About five years ago I was a BMW salesman and in emergencies, where the customer has asked for the car to be debadged after it had left the factory, I have removed them in 5 min whilst the customer waited to collect the car!
