F20 on ice

This weekend our F20 was allowed to play with some other cars on a 3 km track on a frozen lake. With studless tires, it was sliding around happily, lap after lap. I was driving very sideways at times, but the car is easy to control, so I got no spin outs, and didn't touch any snowbank. The fake differential brake works very well, and the balance of the car is perfect. I am also very pleased with the steering.

Most of the driving was done in DSC Off mode, which unfortunately forces comfort engine mapping. Very annoying.

Very cool! Any videos?

Is the helmet required for events like these? It seems a bit over the top.

I'd be surprised if it isn't possible to reprogram the car so that you can still be in sport while you have DSC turned off. I mean, there are so many things people have been able to change through programming, so it's plausible that this could also be changed.

I have a couple of inboard videos from a mobile phone, but I haven't figured out how to edit and upload it.

Helmets are required. I have spent some weekends like this, and i have seen some cars flip over. It happens. In an F20, I don't think the helmet makes much of a difference, but in the older cars it definitely helps.

I haven't seen any successful attempts to fix the drive mode in DSC Off yet. It's the same with the F30 range.

I have also had a chance to test the various driving modes a lot in slippery conditions now. The early DSC systems in the E46 did not suit my driving reflexes. When the car stepped sideways, I instinctively corrected with pedals and steering wheel. The DSC also tried to correct with the braks. In total, it was always too much. I could easily lose control of the car after a series of overcorrections. I found it more dangerous to drive around with it enabled than disabled.

In the F20, the DSC is a lot better. It no longer overcorrects. I can still drive faster with DSC Off, since DSC brakes too much (even in Sport+), but I consider it safe. I can leave the systems enabled in public traffic.

The Sport+ setups is biased towards oversteer. It is almost impossible to make it understeer in slippery conditions. It does however allow the back end to step out quite a bit, just the way most BMW drivers prefer.

I agree on this. It's come a long way since the E46 DSC operated. I have never been driving on a frozen lake, but it sounds fun.

Most of you have probably noticed that the F20/21 gathers a lot of dust on the back side. I got a picture of it after driving in snow...

Not much rearward visibilty.

It is great fun. I have done it every winter since 1999, one or two weekends per year.
The F20 is very nice for the purpose. Nimble and stable at the same time.

Nice driving, and nice photos! Where did you drive?
I heard there was an ice driving event by Autostrada in Kviteseid, Telemark this weekend.

We drove at Oftevatn by Høydalsmo. The host was BMW Car Club Oslo & Akershus.
Maybe the Autostrada event is at the same track.

It is so much fun to drive on ice! Looks like a perfect day for both you and the car
I drove the most time with DSC off, the Sport+ mode wasn't too much fun to drive in i think, to much braking as you say.

Here is a pic of me in my car at Ferdinand Motor's event at Vurrusjøen Iceway:

You even have a fairly clean car! :-)

Looks like you installed rear mud flaps as well. Did they fit easily?
And I notice you also have that ugly warning sticker on the passenger side sun visor. I am always annoyed by how it looks in pictures.

Im surprised that i drove all the way from Hønefoss to Trysil, and the car looked like this! (The weather was cold as ice though)

Yes, they fitted very easily. Its a bit loose on the top, but i think that is because i didn't let the glue dry out as much as it should.
And i agree, it is a bit annoying with that sticker... I have thought about ordering one from a RHD car actually, because there is no sticker on the drivers site

They are original BMW parts. BMW claims they do not fit M-Sport cars, but they do.
