Exhaust blip

Is there a ECU program to give you a blip when you change gears ?

Only if you have the 'Sport' Auto fitted (paddles)

Oh right so there's no kind of aftermarket kit you can program the ECU

No auto manual iv got, wanted the trip tonic but only came in the 120i +

It's only a bit of software and only for show.

The f20/21 1 series auto only has a single automatic gearbox the ZF 8HP45. That's if you have a 116i or M135i.

If you pay the extra 110 for sports auto you get steering wheel paddles and changes to the software that prevents up and down changes during manual mode changes so you can redline the engine if you want. You don't get a different gearbox, just paddles and software changes.
If you down shift with the standard software gearbox the revs are increased to match engine speed with the rotational speed of the lower gear. On the sports auto the revs are increased further to give a sporty blip on down changes.

This is interesting, because there are some owners (including myself) who want paddle shifters but can't have. So do you say that if I buy the paddles (or a wheel with paddles on) all I need is a reprogramming?

In theory yes.

Trouble is I don't know how easy it would be to obtain the relevant software and what is required to flash the gearbox ecu. It's not just a simple coding job.

Another stupid BMW decision, it's marketing departments fault to only offer higher spec options on higher spec models.
I'm not too bothered about paddles but for a 110 option I would have had them if I was allowed to spec them when ordering.

Lot's of cars do this but it's a soft downshift anyway as the lockup clutch is open for a split second on downshifts so the torque converter takes up any speed difference. DSG/DCT's and automated manuals have to be a bit more careful though.

My old Alfa 156 Selespeed was the first "Automatic" I had that blipped the revs on downshifts. I think they only did that to take your mind off the fact that the downshifts took to long. lol
