They would be fools not to introduce this to the market. I have no doubt this car will sell and I have a feeling it will be their new flagship car.

It doesn't make any sense to me, but then I guess it doesn't need to. I thought the even numbers were for two door vehicles and the odd ones were for four door vehicles....clearly I was wrong.

Well, to some extent, you may have a point there, yet I suspect BMW want a four door sub-compact as well. The 3er is a compact car, but now it's comfortable for front and rear passengers, so I see the point of "growing up" the 3er. Too the 3er fits in the mid-range as goes pricing, but certainly at the upper end of the middle (not including options). This 1/2 thing would let them offer something at the lower end of the middle, whereby one can get a reasonable assortment of options and still come in under $40K, which is rather hard to do with a 3er these days.

The question I have is whether or not this new model will assume the spot the 3er holds for driving prowess, which for me is the reason to buy a 3 and not a 5 or 6 or 7.

Def agree. I went from an E34 to an E90, and felt the E90 was only a tiny bit smaller than the E34. A new BMW sedan that's around the size of E36 would be awesome and I would def consider one.

BMW has been beaten to market in other segments, but a successful X1 and a small four door sedan would be a major coup with respect to the entry level luxury market. The current models have all moved upmarket in the US and smaller more fuel efficient cars are in demand. if only for the us market, like the e82 coupe, a 1 series sedan is needed.

I'm in for an M2 gran coupe that's as badass as the 1M. Timing would be about right for getting out of my e90, as well. In general, I'm not a fan of BMW throwing around the M badge and coming out with a million models, but I feel like a smaller sport sedan would be a nod to the olden days that established the company as a legit enthusiast's car company.

Again, this is great news. The F30 has simply gotten too large, and this rumored 2-series Gran Coupe will be the perfect successor to the E46 sedan, which was the perfect size for a car of its utility.

It'll now be interesting to see if BMW actually makes an M version of this car.

F20 = 5-door 1-series
F21 = 3-door 1-series
F22 = 2-door 2-series
F23 = convertible 2-series
F24 = 2-series Gran Coupe?

I don't think they're worried about that. The current 128 and 135 already have identical engines to the 3ers, so the performance is similar, if not better in the 1er.

Premium priced hatchbacks are a tough sell in the US.

That's why you don't see BMW bring one to the US.

There won't be a 2 series sedan, the article is talking about a 2 series 4 door coupe (Grand Coupe / GC)
