125i excessive & stubborn exhaust carbon
Featured on BIMMERPOST.com I wash my car weekly and I'm finding a unusually large amount of carbon on my exhaust tips. They are almost completely black after 1 week and this is what it looks like after washing: I have to hit it with a polish and steel wool to remove what's left above. Is anyone else having this issue? I've noticed poor fuel consumption compared to others - is it running rich? Cheers

The same happens to me. After about 50km drive I have to clean it. Gets dirty really quick!
The thing is the carbon is starting to attack the chrome on the exhaust. And if I use steel wool it will remove the chrome. |

Wow lol not the responses I was expecting...
So there's absolutely nothing we can do but let this crap eat in to the chrome?

Mine is the same after a week or two. To be fair my golf Gti was exactly the same.
I wash them with warm soapy water first then use metal polish which also provides a protective barrier which makes them easier to clean the next time around. Any stubborn marks I use this in conjunction with wire wool. http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/s...egoryId_165527

IIRC a quick squirt of WD-40 on the tips (just on the tips!) helps protect from carbon but doesnt mask it... let it dry first before allowing to get hot....?

Over on babybmw there's a big thread on this, it's happening on all the petrol models and on the dark chrome tips of the M135i it's eating into the coating.
Some have even had their exhaust tips replaced under warranty. Cheers Lee |

This is exactly the problem I'm having: http://www.babybmw.net/viewtopic.php...exhaust+carbon Going to call and harass my dealer today about a few other problems; might as well throw this in.
