I can see the argument that the 1 is the ugliest BMW in their lineup right now (which is probably why it made the list in the first place), but I can name at least 20-30 current production cars on the market that look a lot worse. The Mitsubishi Evo should have been on that list as well, for example.

materials wise yea, there are not many differences but just on the whole the 3 gives a more grownup, refined feel, that's more what I meant, but that's also why I love the 1, it's a "back to basics" BMW
