Could it be the rubber joint that connects the propshaft to the gearbox?
My F20 116i didn't make any noises engaging 1st.
If it does it with the clutch fully depressed, then maybe it's dragging.
(air in the hydraulics)
Try pumping the pedal twice before trying to engage gear.
