Going vertical to accommodate a motor/trans is not the same.
I gather you are not putting the 2AT in the same category as these two.
The 2AT and the Mini and the future 1 series all have the same UKL platform. The engine and transmission is installed in the same way as in low cars, but the front overhang is rather short compared to most FWD cars. I think BMW prefers it that way.
