I think exactly the opposite way. If you have a 114i M Sport, you want to tell other drivers you don't have 300+ horsepower, so they don't go home bragging that they beat an M135i off the line. If you DO have an M135i, it is easier to surprise other drivers if you debadge it. The real enthusiasts will recognize it anyway.
