I feel your pain, had similar situations before.

Anyway, 3mm is fine with stock bolts. And indeed, as ovekvam says, don't use too long. Tested it once, because I didn't have my stock bolts nearby. On my MINI I wasn't able to rotate the wheel if the bolts were too long!
