I read somewhere that he only ate a banana and an apple for the role in The Machinist. What's as incredible is how quick he got in shape for Batman afterward.
While it's true that many actors/actresses do it all the time, it's not the best for the human body. I believe Bale has a condition from the drastic change in the quick amount of time between the two mentioned movies.
I wonder how tall Fifty is. He has to be well over 6' because at 160, he looks extremely malnourished.
