Looking at the figures over on another forum the auto version is getting higher MPG on the motorway at higher speeds. Probably due to the tall 8th gear.
Our 116i auto gets 36mpg around town but 50mpg is possible with cruise set at 75mph on longer runs.
Cold weather really hurts economy though, especially on short runs.
