Smashing the throttle without pressing that 'button' will still change gears down. Depending on what mode you're in, the number of gears it shifts down changes. It does it in my base Mazda 6, does it in my passat, R30, jag S-type, fortuner.... And almost all automatics.
Actually, that button does deal out a little more torque from the engine. BMW always rates their engines at Xnm Torque with X+Ynm of over boost for 5 seconds.
So that button does give more torque = slightly faster acceleration.
